This page lists counsellors, social workers and psychotherapists. The list is chosen by professional title, not by price.
A counsellor, a social worker and a psychotherapist do different work. A counsellor works with how you are managing now: a bereavement, trouble at home or at work, a decision you cannot make alone. A social worker works with the situation around you as well as with you, and often knows what help exists locally and how to reach it. A psychotherapist works over a longer stretch with patterns that keep repeating.
Check the exact title on the register the practitioner is listed with.
Cost is the most common reason people stop looking for therapy. The price a practitioner lists first is often not the only price they have.
A sliding-scale fee is set according to what a person earns. Many practitioners keep a small number of places at one, and do not advertise them. Asking is normal and it is not an imposition. A short message saying what you can manage each month is enough, and a practitioner who cannot help will usually say who can.
Cost also moves with the shape of the work. Sessions every second week cost less than weekly ones.
Group therapy costs less than individual therapy. For some difficulties it is the right treatment, not a lesser version of the individual kind. Time-limited work with a clear ending is often cheaper in total than open-ended work.
Beyond private practice there are usually three routes: the public health service, university clinics and training clinics where supervised trainees see clients at a low fee, and non-profit counselling organisations.
Ask about fees in your first message, before a session is booked.
