France reserves the titles psychologue and psychothérapeute by law. Each rests on a public list rather than on a description of training. A psychologue must hold one of the qualifying diplomas set by decree, and the regional health agency draws up the list for the département.
A psychothérapeute must be entered on the national register of psychotherapists. Psychopraticien, thérapeute and coach are not reserved words, so no list covers them. A psychiatre is a doctor, entered on a roll of the Ordre des médecins.
In France there are three routes. Mon soutien psy funds a set number of therapy sessions with a participating psychologist each calendar year at a tariff the scheme fixes. You no longer need to see a doctor first, and it is open to children as well as adults, for mild to moderate distress.
The state reimburses most of the tariff and a mutuelle can cover the rest, which leaves nothing to pay. Centres médico-psychologiques are free and financed by social security, staffed by psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and nurses, and heavier psychiatric need is directed there. Otherwise you pay a therapist's own fee, and no French professional body publishes a schedule of them.
