Austria's rule turns on a doctor's examination. Under the General Social Insurance Act, section 135, clinical psychological treatment is only reimbursable where that examination is documented. It must have happened before the second session. Since 2026 the OeGK provides clinical psychological treatment as a benefit in kind, at the fund's cost. Psychotherapy works differently.

A freelance psychotherapist holds no contract with the OeGK. The person pays the invoice, then claims a subsidy the law sets. From spring 2026 a central service desk allocates places. It is run by the professional body BOeP, and capacity is spread across Austria by population.

In Austria, psychotherapist is a state-regulated title, and the official list of who holds it is the Psychotherapeutenliste, maintained by the Federal Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection.

A psychotherapist should appear on that list in order to practise psychotherapy lawfully, which makes it a direct answer rather than an indirect signal. For a title that is not psychotherapy, this list is not the right check.

You can open the ministry's Psychotherapeutenliste search. Under the Psychologengesetz 2013 the word Psychologe on its own means a psychology degree, not a licence to treat. The treating titles are Klinischer Psychologe and Gesundheitspsychologe, each entered on its own Berufsliste.
