What a session costs
Across Portugal, a session with a psychologist commonly costs EUR 40 to EUR 70. Those are advertised prices, not official rates.
Therapy fees in Portugal are set by each practice, so what a psychologist or psychiatrist charges depends on their qualifications, the length of the session and where they work. If the fee is beyond your means, ask about a sliding scale based on income, and look at community mental health services and university training clinics.
Registration and licensing
In Portugal, psychology is a regulated profession. The professional title and the right to practise both depend on registration with the Ordem dos Psicólogos Portugueses, which grants the title and issues the cédula profissional, the professional card.
The Order runs a public directory that confirms whether a person is registered, searchable by name or by cédula number. Psychiatrists are doctors and sit under medical regulation, so this directory does not answer for one.
You can search the Ordem dos Psicólogos Portugueses directory. Portugal has no separate psicoterapeuta title. Regulamento n.º 15/2023 counts psychotherapeutic intervention among the acts of the psychologist, so the same registration check answers.
Therapists by profession and city
Real choice. Authentic, independent, clinician-led care.
TherapyRoute is a clinician-led directory that champions independent practitioners who answer to you and their professional ethics. We don't take commissions, sell your data, or assign therapists by algorithm. You browse, compare, and choose.
