Healing often requires both compassion and accountability. Many of us carry the impact of experiences that were beyond our control, while also relying on ways of coping, surviving, and protecting ourselves that made sense at the time. Together, we can explore these patterns with curiosity and compassion, while making space for change where it feels needed.

About Me

Hello, I'm João. I'm a Therapeutic Counsellor based in Tomar, Portugal, and I work online with clients both in Portugal and internationally. I am an NCPS Accredited Registrant and work with adults from a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences. Many of the people who come to see me are carrying the impact of trauma. Sometimes that trauma stems from childhood experiences, abuse, neglect, loss, or difficult relationships. Sometimes it shows up in ways that are less obvious: shame, anxiety, people-pleasing, difficulties with trust, relationship struggles, or feeling stuck in patterns that no longer serve us. I often think of these struggles as different parts of us trying their best to help. The part that avoids. The part that pushes people away. The part that stays busy. The part that drinks. The part that worries. The part that keeps everyone happy. Rather than seeing these parts as problems to get rid of, I believe there is value in understanding what they are trying to protect and what they may need from us. Sessions are 50€ and take place online. I also keep a limited number of reduced-fee spaces for students, unemployed clients, and people on a low income. If cost is a concern, feel free to get in touch and we can discuss what might be possible.

Approach

My approach is relational, trauma-informed, and integrative, drawing primarily from humanistic, psychodynamic, relational, and parts-based ways of working. Most of us developed ways of coping, surviving, protecting ourselves, or getting our needs met that made sense at the time. Sometimes those ways of coping continue to serve us. Sometimes they begin to get in the way. I am honoured to walk alongside my clients as they explore what still serves them, what no longer does, and what they may be ready to let go of. Together, we can explore the experiences that shaped you, the patterns that keep showing up in your life, and the different parts of yourself that may sometimes seem to be pulling in different directions. Often there is a part that wants connection and another that wants distance. A part that wants change and another that feels frightened of it. A part that wants to rest and another that feels guilty for slowing down. Rather than judging these parts, I believe we can get curious about them. When we understand them more deeply, we can often respond to ourselves with greater compassion, make more intentional choices, and build healthier relationships with both ourselves and others. While understanding is important, I also believe in movement. My role is not only to help you make sense of your experiences, but also to support you in creating the changes you would like to see in your life, relationships, and sense of self. If you're unsure whether therapy with me would be the right fit, you're welcome to get in touch and tell me a little about what's bringing you to therapy. I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have.
