Malaysia keeps a statutory register for some mental-health roles and not for others. Counsellors register with the Board of Counsellors under the Counsellors Act 1998, and the title registered counsellor is protected. Clinical psychologists register with the Malaysian Allied Health Professions Council under the Allied Health Professions Act 2016, and a practising certificate is needed too.
Psychiatrists are doctors, and specialist practice sits on the Malaysian Medical Council's specialist register. General, educational and forensic psychologists, and psychotherapists, have no register of their own. You can search for a practitioner on the MAHPC register, or open the Malaysian Medical Council register searches.
Therapy fees in Malaysia are set by each practice, so what a psychologist, counsellor or psychiatrist charges depends on their qualifications, the length of the session and where they work. Therapists generally set what they charge with their own cost of living in mind, and fees tend to track local income levels. If the fee is beyond your means, ask about a sliding scale based on income, and look at community mental health services, university training clinics, and any counselling your employer runs through an assistance programme.
