Services

I am a trauma-informed therapist and work with individual (adult) counselling and EAP (Employee Assistance Programme). I offer counselling/therapy via face to face and also online counselling/therapy/tele psychological support. I also offer hypnotherapy as well as EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) services too.

I worked with client on various issues and struggle they had and had a strong passion to work with PTSD, depression, anxiety, trauma and childhood distressing memory.

I work closely with my client building a safe, therapeutic relationship for sharing and growth. I particularly like a quote by Irwin Yalom on the relationship between therapist and client journeying together and growing together. Hope to be in your journey of healing!

“Irvin Yalom described the client and therapist as “fellow travelers, both on a journey of discovery together.”

Approach

I uses integration theories from Person Centred Therapy, Mindfulness's concept and practices, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and modalities such as sand play, as well as technique from creative art therapy, journaling, hypnotherapy (that work wonders with subconscious and unconscious mind as we are being shaped a lot by value and belief from childhood) and also EMDR (eye movement desensitization reprocessing) a memory reprocessing method that work wonders with distressing memory and trauma. EMDR is recommended by WHO- World Health Organization for PTSD). I attune my approach based on client needs, style and issues.

online session ???

Online session -  does it work?

This is a question that often posed to me by potential client. it was also a question that was on my mind at the beginning of the pandemic, Covid 19 that changes way on how we life, how we work and how we do session.

Having been working fully virtual since early 2020, I would say, yes, online session can work effectively if not better than a face to face session.

As a counselor/therapist we had been trained about building a safe therapeutic relationship and rapport building and trust building with our client and our training here in Malaysia had not prepare us on doing a virtual session nor preparing us for the pandemic.

Thus with the pandemic, we basically had to unlearn and relearn to cope with session virtually and I had come to love online session so much.

Among some benefit for both client and counselor: no traffic jam, can cover different logistic area, no need to dress up  with make up (well sufficiently decent of course), client comfortable at their cozy place ie their home and we are cozy too at our home. so in a way both are comfortable in our own space and session can be comfortable and more productive. Of course this only apply to client who have a private place or a room for session and not struggling to get a place to have the session.

Personally I felt online session can be as effective as face to face, though the focus had shift in which due to the pandemic- crease a lot of unease feeling for a lot of us that feel confused, fear as well as a lot of other emotional and practical issues to struggle with.

Thus, to do an effective online session, the first thing we had to ensure client stability before we begin our deeper work. Thus, with online session spending more session to ensure client stability with mindfulness work, relaxation exercises, relaxation hypnotherapy, as well as some stabilization tools from EMDR etc.

Oh ya, and also discover EMDR can be conducted virtually too after ensuring client stabilization for EMDR intervention. Personally find it work as well as face to face EMDR.

I had also discovered techniques from art therapy that can be used beautifully with virtual session and can have great exploring session with client which sometime a talking therapy can't as art help client to unlock some of the deeper rooted issues but at the same time a lot of processing going on and help client to get insight and how to move forward too.

I loved the function of the webcam in which there are incidences client felt conscious or to give them the private space to cry, to feel etc, my client will just off the webcam and come back when they are OK. This is something face to face session -can't achieve so client sometime might struggle especially if we had not build enough rapport with them or for some client who like their privacy to cry etc. This function also work well for client who struggle with social anxiety, thus until they are comfortable only they choose to on their webcam. So in a way it allow client to have more control on how they want their session to be conducted and safety & therapeutic created in a way too.

Guess there is always pro and cons of face to face and online session and both had it benefit and place in the counselling world. As a counselor we had to be comfortable with the medium we are using regardless its face to face or online, our key role is to help our client in their life challenges and to support them in their journey of healing. Most importantly, whatever medium we used, client safety is upmost importance.
