Marriage Counsellors & Couples Therapists in Birmingham, the United Kingdom

Both partners usually attend. Sessions run about an hour, most often weekly, and most approaches expect months of work rather than a single conversation ¹.

Each approach sets its own rules for contact with one partner alone. Ask in your first email how the practitioner handles a private call or message from one of you.

No one model beats the rest for relationship distress ⁴. Ask how a practitioner works, and whether it fits the way the two of you talk.

The law protects psychologist titles. Only a registrant of the Health and Care Professions Council may use the titles clinical, counselling, educational and health psychologist, and the Council regulates practitioners rather than practices ⁵.

The same register holds the arts therapies titles, among them art psychotherapist and dramatherapist. Counsellor and psychotherapist are not protected titles. The Professional Standards Authority accredits their registers, UKCP and BACP, which are not statutory ⁶.

Psychiatrists are doctors, and the General Medical Council holds the medical register ⁷. Each nation of the United Kingdom regulates social work separately ⁸.

Couples work is not a separate registration, so check the register for the profession, then ask about experience of seeing two people together.

Titles you will see include Clinical Psychologist, Counselling Psychologist and Educational Psychologist. Search the register by name at Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). A current entry is that body's own published record of the person.

You will have to ask. Each practitioner sets their own fee.

Ask the session length and the fee for two people, often a longer session than an individual one. If the two of you are in different places, ask whether they see couples online.

Where TherapyRoute publishes a cost guide for this country, the country page links to it.

Across the United Kingdom: £40 to £60 for an individual session with a counsellor, per our United Kingdom fee guide. Those are advertised prices, not official rates.

Joint sessions are not always the right first appointment. A careful practitioner screens before agreeing to see you together. The usual reasons are moderate to severe aggression between partners, active alcohol or other substance misuse, a continuing affair, and psychotic symptoms ¹. Individual or specialist treatment comes first.

If one of you is afraid of the other, that is a safety question first. Going alone is a sensible beginning, not a sign you have given up on the relationship.

Four words travel together here: couples counselling, marriage counselling, couples therapy and relationship counselling. A listing under any of the four is the same work.

If nobody listed here can see you soon, widen the search. The country page and sessions online are the route, rather than a second town.

Four things move a fee. The practitioner's registration category, their experience, the session length, and whether you meet in a room or online.

Some counselling is free. The NHS names treatment at another NHS service, an employer, a school or university, and a charity as the routes⁹.

In England, couple therapy for depression is one of the talking therapies NHS services deliver. Those services are free to patients, and a couple can refer themselves³. The NHS offers counselling for certain conditions rather than for relationship difficulty in general.

Lower-fee routes exist here, and this page names them. TherapyRoute holds no other verified lower-fee couples service for the United Kingdom⁸. Where a practitioner states a fee on their listing, that figure is their own. Ask before the first session, and ask whether the fee is charged per session or per person in the room.

Couple therapy is an effective treatment for relationship distress, and the main models reach broadly similar results⁴.

In England the NHS commissions couple therapy for depression, on the strength of a NICE recommendation³.

Those findings describe groups of couples in studies. They are not a forecast about any one relationship, and nobody listed here can promise you an outcome.

What the research does not settle is which approach suits you. Ask a practitioner how they work with two people, and what they do when the two of you want different things.

The practitioner works with what happens between you, not with one person's account of it.

Practice differs on what comes first. Some approaches open with a formal assessment that combines joint and individual meetings. Others use no set assessment stage¹.

Which route you take changes what you meet. Through an NHS talking therapies service in England the therapy comes from a set list, couple therapy for depression among it³. A practitioner you approach privately sets the shape of the work themselves.

Ask before you start whether the practitioner sees each partner alone.

There is no threshold you have to cross first. Relationship distress is one of the commonest reasons adults seek psychotherapy at all⁴.

Distress between partners travels. It is associated with mood, anxiety and substance-use difficulties in the partners themselves, and with difficulties for children in the household¹.

Nobody has to send you. You can refer yourself to an NHS talking therapies service without speaking to a GP, and a practitioner you pay privately needs no referral either⁹.

Couples come with a repeating argument, with an affair, with a decision about whether to stay together, and with none of those. You do not have to agree on the problem before you make contact.

Where there is violence or fear at home, these routes come before counselling.

Each nation runs its own domestic abuse helpline, and a separate line covers the whole United Kingdom for men ¹⁰. The government page carries them, with live chat and email beside the telephone, in many languages.

You can ask the police whether a partner has a record of abuse. That is the right to ask under the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, and someone may ask on behalf of a friend or relative.

For protection through a court in England or Wales, you can apply for a non-molestation order or an occupation order online, by email or by post ¹¹. Where a child is at risk, contact the children's social care team at the local council; Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own route ¹². A mediation meeting is not required before a court application where there has been domestic abuse ².
