Both partners usually attend. Sessions run about an hour, most often weekly, and most approaches expect months of work rather than a single conversation ¹.

Each approach sets its own rules for contact with one partner alone. Ask in your first email how the practitioner handles a private call or message from one of you.

No one model beats the rest for relationship distress ³. Ask how a practitioner works, and whether it fits the way the two of you talk.

Psychologist is a protected title. The National Law says a person must not use it in a way that suggests they are registered, unless they are ⁴.

Registration sits with the Psychology Board of Australia through Ahpra. General registration follows a six-year sequence of education and training ⁵.

A psychologist with further training may hold an endorsement in an approved area of practice. The public register records that as a notation ⁶. Psychiatrists are doctors, and hold specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia ⁷.

Counselling and psychotherapy are not professions the National Scheme registers, so the register does not answer for a counsellor. Couples work is not a separate endorsement. Check the register for the profession, then ask about experience of seeing two people together.

Titles you will see include Psychologist (Psych), Provisional Psychologist (Prov. Psych) and Clinical Psychologist. Search the register by name at Psychology Board of Australia (via AHPRA). A current entry is that body's own published record of the person.

You will have to ask. Each practitioner sets their own fee.

Ask the session length and the fee for two people, often a longer session than an individual one. If the two of you are in different places, ask whether they see couples online.

Joint sessions are not always the right first appointment. A careful practitioner screens before agreeing to see you together. The usual reasons are moderate to severe aggression between partners, active alcohol or other substance misuse, a continuing affair, and psychotic symptoms ¹. Individual or specialist treatment comes first.

If one of you is afraid of the other, that is a safety question first. Going alone is a sensible beginning, not a sign you have given up on the relationship.

Couples counselling, marriage counselling, relationship counselling and couples therapy name the same work. A listing spelled the American way is not a different service.

If nobody listed here can see you soon, widen the search. The country page and sessions online are the route, rather than a second town.

Four things move a fee. The practitioner's registration category, their experience, the session length, and whether you meet in a room or online.

Lower-fee couples services exist. Relationship Matters Counselling and Mediation, in Melbourne, sees couples in the room or online, at fees scaled to income¹⁰. It is the only Australian couples service whose fee our own record verifies. In another city, ask a community service what it charges.

Where a practitioner states a fee on their listing, that figure is their own. Ask before the first session. Ask too whether the fee runs per session or per person in the room.

Couple therapy is an effective treatment for relationship distress, and the main models reach broadly similar results³.

Behavioural, cognitive-behavioural, emotionally focused and integrative behavioural couple therapy meet the criteria researchers use for a well-established treatment¹¹.

Those findings describe groups of couples in studies. They are not a forecast about any one relationship, and nobody listed here can promise you an outcome.

Ask a practitioner which of those approaches they work in. The approach is something you ask about.

The practitioner works with what happens between you, not with one person's account of it.

Practice differs on what comes first. Some approaches open with a formal assessment that combines joint and individual meetings. Others use no set assessment stage¹.

The Australian Psychological Society's code of ethics sets a standard for work with more than one client¹². The practitioner explains the limits of confidentiality to each person in advance. The practitioner gives each person the chance to consider them, and asks each to accept them.

Ask before you start whether the practitioner sees each partner alone.

There is no threshold you have to cross first. Relationship distress is one of the commonest reasons adults seek psychotherapy at all³.

Distress between partners travels. It is associated with mood, anxiety and substance-use difficulties in the partners themselves, and with difficulties for children in the household¹.

Couples counselling works on a repeating argument, an affair, a separation or a divorce, or none of those. You do not have to agree on the problem, or on whether the relationship continues, before you make contact.

Where there is violence or fear at home, these routes come before counselling.

The national service is 1800RESPECT, funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Social Services ¹³. It gives information, referral and counselling on domestic, family and sexual violence, at any hour and in confidence. It answers the people supporting someone as well as the person at risk, and it keeps a directory of services by area.

The legal route runs through the states. The Magistrates' or Local Court hears applications for a protection order ¹⁴. The services around them differ from one state and territory to the next. Paid family and domestic violence leave is a national workplace entitlement.

Family Relationships Online is the Attorney-General's Department route to family counselling, family dispute resolution, legal advice and a search for local help ¹⁵.

A concern about a child goes to the state or territory government, and each has its own mandatory reporting law ¹⁶.
