Where/What are you going to start?
On Indian soil, there are more methods for meditation than sand crystals. Understanding where to start can be daunting. You might not have found the silver bullet yet, that one strategy to take your mind and soul into the deep blue waters of limitless consciousness. Beginners can't be sure where to start. You don't know what to do, nor where, when, or how to do it.
There are thousands of meditation techniques, but what are your aims? What matters most for you? Which meditation technique is suitable for you, and why do you want to do that?
Meditation should match your need
As I said, there are multiple techniques for meditation. But here, we will only talk about Number meditation. Why? Many of my friends, clients, relatives & other people I engage with complain that they can not concentrate on their work, study or any activity. They lack concentration and can not put 100% of their focus into what they wish to do. This affliction of the distracted mind affects many people, and number meditation can help to improve this. Number mediation is a good place to start and brings tangible results.
Before that, How does the mind work?
The mind is like a monkey; if it is free, it starts to think about sensible or non-sensible things. In the same way that a torch lights up whatever area it moves in, our minds light up any region of thought that we moved our thought process to, even for a short while after moving it towards something else. If you rapidly switch from one subject to another, many areas remain bright and so become distracting. You wander about in clumsy thoughts that do not allow you to focus on anything.
The mind becomes the wavier and master of your life. Whereas you should be the master of your mind by taking control of your mind and giving proper direction to your brain.
Some people used to tell me I am a multi-tasking person, I can do more than one thing at a time. But this is not true. Our minds can do only one thing at a time. It is impossible to do more than one task as per the creation of our mind. Multi-tasking people actually rapidly switch their minds from one task to another and don't realize that they have switched focus. Due to the amount of time that they, and many of us, have practised this technique, most cultivated a plethora of distractions in life.
Our mind always tries to switch from one thought to another thought as that is the habit we have grown accustomed to. If this distractibility is the product of practice, we can also develop the capacity to focus through practice. Number mediation is an excellent way to achieve this.
How to do Number Meditation?
We are going to call it Number Meditation because we will use numbers while doing meditation.
Pre-requisites: Not required, but if possible, choose quite a place.
- First, drink little water, and wash your face. If possible, take a bath.
- Lie down on the floor or the bed for 1-2 minutes.
- Now sit anywhere you want, maybe on the floor, chair or sofa.
- Relax your entire body and breath normally.
- Try to be as quiet as possible and bring your awareness to the present moment.
- Now, according to your time limit for meditation, choose a range of numbers. Multiply each min for meditation by 100, e.g., for 2 mins, consider 200 range, For 4 mins, 400 is your range of numbers.
- If you are a novice, consider 1min, so the range is 1-100.
- Now close your eyes, and count the numbers in reverse order, like 100 to 1.
- DO NOT MAKE MISTAKES while you are counting your numbers.
- If you make a mistake, start over from 100 again.
- Do not worry about other thoughts, issues or breathing cycles. Just count numbers in reverse order.
- Once you finish your defined number range, gently focus on your breath and slowly open your eyes.
You should feel more focused now than compared to before. This technique can reliably increase your focus on any task. If you do this for 2 mins every day for only eight weeks, you will see changes in your thought process and how you approach your work and routine life.
Last Tip Before You Begin
Feel free to try this now. It won't take more than 5 minutes. Plunk down, close your eyes, unwind, and count to 100. In the event that you lose focus, simply notice and then return to the task. Release yourself and offer yourself to the counting. Good.
Feel more daring? Here is a final tip. Start slowing down as you move closer to the last 10 or 20 in your range. Increase the time and space between each number. I find that something ground-breaking happens when I do that. Perhaps you will as well. You may fall into that space between the numbers as your entire being slows down. Wonderful!
