Find Licensed Psychologists in India
❝Find licensed psychologists across India. Easily filter your search by location, identity, or concerns like anxiety or depression in cities such as Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, and more.❞
Our directory helps you search for and connect with psychologists across the country.
Psychologists typically hold postgraduate qualifications, such as an MA or MSc in Psychology. For Clinical Psychologists, registration with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) is a key indicator of specialised training and adherence to clinical standards. While the regulatory landscape continues to evolve, these qualifications and registrations offer reassurance.
For our featured psychologists (our Pro members), we make every effort to verify their stated academic credentials and, when applicable, their RCI registration status.
You can easily filter your search by location (state or city), the issues they address (such as anxiety, depression, or relationship concerns), or by identity—such as male, female, or LGBTQ+—to find a psychologist you feel comfortable with.

Types of Psychologists in India
Psychologists are trained professionals who study the mind, emotions, and behaviour. They help people understand themselves better and cope with life's challenges. Think of them as guides for your mental and emotional well-being.
You might come across psychologists with different focus areas:
Therapy should be personal. Therapists listed on TherapyRoute are qualified, independent, and free to answer to you – no scripts, algorithms, or company policies.
Find Your TherapistClinical Psychologists: These psychologists are specially trained to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions like depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, OCD, trauma, and personality disorders. They often work in hospitals, clinics, or private practice.
Counselling Psychologists: They typically help people deal with life stressors, relationship problems, grief, work issues, self-esteem, or personal growth. The focus is often on improving coping skills and overall well-being.
Educational/School Psychologists: Work within schools or educational settings. They help students with learning difficulties, behavioural challenges, exam stress, and social-emotional development.
Organisational/Industrial Psychologists: Focus on workplace behaviour. They help companies with things like employee selection, training, leadership development, and workplace well-being. (You usually wouldn't seek therapy from this type).
Health Psychologists: Explore the link between psychology and physical health. They might help people manage chronic illness, cope with pain, or adopt healthier habits.
Neuropsychologists: Specialise in how brain function affects thinking and behaviour. They often assess and help individuals with brain injuries, dementia, or neurological conditions.
For therapy or help with mental health concerns, you'll likely be looking for a Clinical Psychologist or a Counselling Psychologist. The best fit depends on your specific needs.
Qualifications to Look For
It's important to know your psychologist has the right training. Qualifications can vary, especially between Clinical and Counselling roles.
Here’s a simple breakdown:
Basic Academic Qualification: At minimum, a psychologist should have a Master's degree (MA or MSc) in Psychology from a recognised university. This is the foundation.
For Clinical Psychologists (The Gold Standard for Mental Illness):
- M.Phil in Clinical Psychology: This is a crucial 2-year, full-time, specialised training program after the Master's degree. It includes intensive supervised practical training in assessment and therapy.
- Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) License: This is vital. Graduates of RCI-approved M.Phil programs can register with the RCI and get a CRR (Central Rehabilitation Register) number. This license legally permits them to practice as a Clinical Psychologist in India, including diagnosing and treating mental health disorders.
- Always ask for or check for an RCI registration (CRR number) if seeking help for a diagnosed mental health condition or if you need psychological assessment.
For Counselling Psychologists:
- Regulation is less uniform than for Clinical Psychologists.
- Look for a Master's degree in Psychology (MA/MSc), ideally with a specialisation in Counselling Psychology.
- Many also complete Post Graduate Diplomas in Counselling or specific therapy training (e.g., in CBT, Person-Centred Therapy).
- While there's no single mandatory license like RCI for counsellors focusing on general life issues, look for evidence of solid training and experience.
Important Note: The term "psychologist" itself isn't strictly protected in this country for all types of practice. However, only RCI-registered Clinical Psychologists are licensed to independently diagnose and treat mental illnesses. For therapy addressing diagnosed conditions, prioritise RCI registration. For general life stress, relationship issues, or personal growth, a well-trained Counselling Psychologist (with a Master's and potentially additional diplomas/training) can be very effective.
Key Tips for Choosing the Right Psychologist
Finding someone you connect with is just as important as their qualifications. Therapy is personal.
Here are tips to help you choose:
Know Your Needs: Are you dealing with daily stress, relationship issues (Counselling Psychologist might fit), or symptoms of a specific mental health condition like severe anxiety or depression (RCI-registered Clinical Psychologist is recommended)? Having a sense of your needs helps narrow the search.
Check Their Experience: Does the psychologist mention experience with the specific issues you're facing? Look at their profile on TherapyRoute.com or their website.
Consider Their Approach: Different psychologists use different methods (e.g., CBT focuses on thoughts/behaviours, psychodynamic explores past experiences). You don't need to be an expert, but reading a little about their approach might help you see if it resonates.
The Comfort Factor:
- Do you feel comfortable talking to them?
- Many offer a brief initial call or consultation (sometimes paid). Use this chance!
- Ask yourself: Do I feel heard and respected? Can I imagine opening up to this person? Do they explain things clearly?
- It's okay to speak to more than one psychologist before deciding. Finding the right therapeutic relationship is key.
Language: Can you communicate easily and comfortably in the language(s) they offer therapy in?
Location/Mode: Do they offer in-person sessions near you, or are online sessions available and suitable for you?
Fees: Understand the cost per session. Ask if they have sliding scale options if affordability is a concern.
Availability: Does their schedule fit with yours?
