In the United States what you pay depends on your insurance as much as on the therapist, and many therapists do not take insurance directly. With an in-network provider you pay a copay and your plan pays the therapist.

There is no single national licence for therapists in the United States. Every state, and the District of Columbia, licenses through its own boards under its own practice law. Psychologists, counsellors, social workers and family therapists therefore each answer to a board in the state where they practise, under whatever title that state uses. Because the licence is a state licence, the question that works anywhere is which state licence covers the care you receive.

The Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards keeps one directory of every state and territory board. Each board's own licence-verification search sits beside its entry. Start there, with the state where your therapist practises. That directory covers psychology boards.

Counsellors, social workers and marriage and family therapists answer to different boards in the same states. For those titles, ask which board and which state. For a psychologist, verify with the ASPPB directory of state and provincial licensing boards.

For the other titles, use that state board's own licence lookup. Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist are titles a state licence carries, and the wording differs by state.

The counselling licence is worded differently again from one state to the next, as Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Mental Health Counselor or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor. Counsellor and therapist on their own do not say whether a licence exists, because some counselling occupations are licensed and some are not.
