About Me
Approach
Alex Macfarlane practices as a Person-Centred counsellor. This is approach is a Humanistic Therapeutic approach that places the clients person at the centre of therapy. What this means is that the counsellor is not the expert, you the client are the expert on you. A Person-Centred counsellors job through empathy, understanding, active listening and non-judgement, is to get to know you and form a strong, trusting, helping relationship. Where from this you the client, will be able to explore, unpack, focus and share on your life and happenings with the support and facilitation from the counsellor.
In this way of therapeutic working then, the counselling relationship yourself and the counsellor are able to to develop between you, is a central axis for the rest of the therapeutic work. This is why initial consultations, and 'auditioning' a few counsellors to begin with can be a good idea. So that you as a client can get a feel for who you think you can work closely and well with.
Ask a quick question or arrange a time to meet.
Services
Alex Macfarlane specialises in two main areas, Trauma work and LGBT+/sexuality & gender.
Trauma can consist of one-off event/experiences (death, loss, life events or sudden change etc), or cumulative and prolonged experiences (bullying, physical/emotional abuse, dysfunctional intimate relationships etc). Trauma is also subjective, what is traumatic for one person, may not be for another and vice versa.
LGBT+/Sexuality & Gender issues, are experiences that we all have in some form or another. Having an affirming, open, safe and confidential space to explore our sexuality & gender experiences is crucial.
