What couples counselling is, and what it is not
Couples counselling is a talking treatment in which two partners are seen together and the relationship is the focus.
The different approaches share the same ground 1. A relational frame. An active style of working. Attention to the patterns that keep a difficulty in place.
The counsellor is not there to say who is right.
It is not advice-giving and it is not a ruling on whether a marriage should continue. Couples come married and unmarried, before a wedding and long after one, and sometimes while separating. Relationship distress is one of the common reasons adults seek therapy anywhere 2.
How does a session with two people work?
Both partners attend. That is the standard way this work is done, with rules set in advance about any separate contact with one partner 1. Ask before you book.
A session is commonly about an hour and often weekly, and many approaches expect a course of work running over months. Sessions online are ordinary now, and they help where getting two people into one room at the same time is the hardest part.
No single model has been shown to beat the others for relationship distress 2. Choose on fit, language and availability rather than on the name of the method.
Who is qualified to do this work?
The Sri Lanka Medical Council regulates medical, dental and allied healthcare professionals, the last of those under the Medical (Amendment) Act No. 15 of 2006 3. It publishes no register you can search, and confirms a registration only on paid written application 4.
Counselling is not covered by a single national register that we could open. So the check is a question rather than a lookup. Ask what a practitioner's qualification is and where it was awarded. Ask which body they are registered or accredited with, and whether that body publishes a register.
Our listings show each practitioner's stated category and qualifications, and those are what your question should be about.
How couples work is charged
We do not publish a figure for Sri Lanka and we do not calculate one. There is no TherapyRoute cost guide for this country yet, and inventing a range would be worse than saying so.
A couples session is often longer than an individual one. Practitioner category and experience matter. Sessions online are sometimes priced differently from sessions in a consulting room.
Ask each practitioner what a session for two people costs and how long it runs before you book.
Is couples counselling the right first step?
Some situations call for something else before a joint session.
Moderate to severe aggression between partners is one reason 1. Active alcohol or other substance misuse is another. So are a continuing affair and psychotic symptoms.
Individual or specialist treatment usually comes first. Couples work can follow.
Where one of you is afraid of the other, the safety services below come first. They exist for that and they are free. Going alone to a first appointment is a normal way to start and is not a decision about the relationship.
Couples counselling across Sri Lanka
The couples-qualified practitioners on our own listings are concentrated in Colombo, with a few elsewhere 5. Between them they record Sinhala, Tamil and English. Every listing shows the languages a practitioner works in.
Because the numbers are small, availability rather than choice is often the constraint. Practitioners offering sessions online widen what is reachable from outside Colombo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a register I can check a counsellor against?
Not one you can open yourself. The Sri Lanka Medical Council regulates medical, dental and allied healthcare professionals, the last under the Medical (Amendment) Act No. 15 of 20063.
So ask what the qualification is, where it was awarded, and which body a practitioner is accredited with.
Do we have to travel to Colombo?
Most of the couples-qualified practitioners on our own listings are in Colombo, with a few elsewhere5.
Many practitioners work by video and say so on their listing. That is what makes the work reachable from outside the city. Psychotherapy delivered live by video reaches outcomes close to in- person work, across therapies in general6.
Ask about travel time and about video in the same message.
What does marriage counselling cost in Sri Lanka?
TherapyRoute holds no cost guide for Sri Lanka, and we will not print a range we have not measured.
Four things move a fee. The practitioner's registration category, their experience, the session length, and whether you meet in a room or online.
Where a practitioner states a fee on their listing, that figure is their own. Ask before the first session. Ask too whether the fee runs per session or per person in the room.
What happens in a marriage counselling session?
The practitioner works with what happens between you, not with one person's account of it.
Practice differs on what comes first. Some approaches open with a formal assessment that combines joint and individual meetings. Others use no set assessment stage1.
A first meeting normally covers three things. Why you are coming now, how each of you sees the problem, and what each of you wants changed.
Ask before you start whether the practitioner sees each partner alone. Ask how you will know the work is done.
Will health insurance pay for marriage counselling in Sri Lanka?
We hold no source on this. Neither for the state service nor for a private policy, and we will not guess at one.
Employer and private policies set their own outpatient benefits, and counselling is often outside them.
Ask your insurer whether outpatient consultations are covered and with which categories of practitioner, and ask the practitioner what they are able to invoice.
When should we go for marriage counselling?
There is no threshold you have to cross first. Relationship distress is one of the commonest reasons adults seek psychotherapy at all2.
Distress between partners travels. It is associated with mood, anxiety and substance-use difficulties in the partners themselves, and with difficulties for children in the household1.
Couples come with a repeating argument, with an affair, with a decision about whether to stay together, and with none of those. You do not have to agree on the problem before you make contact.
If the problem is safety rather than the relationship
Where someone is being hurt or threatened at home, these are the services for it.
The Ministry of Women and Child Affairs runs a national women's helpline 7. The National Child Protection Authority runs a free line for children 8. It answers at any hour, in Sinhala, Tamil and English.
Sri Lanka also puts help inside the hospital system. Mithuru Piyasa, called Natpu Nilayam in Tamil, is a desk inside a government hospital. It is for adults affected by gender-based or domestic violence.
Staff give support and refer on to psychiatry, legal aid and financial help. The Ministry of Health's national guideline records these desks in hospitals across the island 9.
The legal route is a protection order under the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act 10. You apply at the Magistrate's Court where you live, or where the violence happened. A police officer may apply on someone's behalf.
For relationship work itself there is the Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka's Alokaya centre in Colombo 11. It names marital, premarital and psychological counselling among its services, in person and online.
