What couples counselling is
Couples counselling is talking therapy for two people together, and the relationship is what is being worked on rather than either partner.
Approaches generally share similar features 1. The counsellor takes an active part and works on the patterns that keep a difficulty going. They build an alliance with both of you at once.
The practitioner does not decide who is at fault.
It is not legal advice, and it does not settle anything about the legal status of a marriage. It is also not only for couples in crisis. Relationship distress is one of the ordinary reasons adults look for therapy 2.
How does a session with two people work?
Both partners in the room is the standard arrangement, with rules agreed beforehand about any separate contact with one of you 1. Ask what happens to what you say in a private message or call.
Sessions are commonly about an hour and often weekly, and many approaches expect a course of work over months. Expect the first sessions to be about history and pattern rather than solutions.
Online sessions are widely offered, which reaches couples on other islands and couples where one partner works abroad. Different models produce broadly similar results for relationship distress 2, so fit and practicality are reasonable grounds for choosing.
Who is qualified to do this work?
Titles here are licensed, and the licence can be checked online.
Only a person licensed by the Professional Regulation Commission may use the title psychologist 3. Psychometricians are licensed separately by the same board. The Commission's Board of Guidance and Counseling registers guidance counsellors 4.
Psychiatrists are doctors. No one may practise medicine without a Certificate of Registration from the Board of Medical Examiners 5.
No Commission board licenses couples or family therapy as a profession of its own. Psychologists may focus on couples and families.
The Commission's verification service lets you check a name and licence yourself. Every listing here shows the category the practitioner states, so check the category first, then verify the licence.
Titles you will see include Registered Psychologist (RPsych) and Registered Guidance Counselor. Search the registers by name at PRC - Board of Psychology (PRC-Psych) or PRC - Board of Guidance and Counseling (PRC-Guidance). Check that the name and title match and that the entry is current. If they do not, ask the practitioner why.
What couples counselling costs in Quezon City
Practitioners set their own fees.
Our guide to what therapy costs in the Philippines sets out the ranges people are quoted and what moves them 6. Read it first. Then ask each practitioner what a session for two people costs and how long it runs. A couples session is often longer than an individual one.
Fees differ between Metro Manila and the rest of the country and between practitioner categories.
Across the Philippines: ₱1,000 to ₱5,000 for an individual session, per our Philippines fee guide. Those are advertised prices.
Is couples counselling the right first step?
There are cases where a joint session should not be the first appointment.
Moderate to severe aggression between partners is one reason 1. Active alcohol or other substance misuse is another. So are a continuing affair and psychotic symptoms.
A practitioner should ask about these before seeing a couple together.
Couples sessions require safety. If one partner is frightened of the other, the safety route comes first. The law here gives you one that starts in your own barangay. Seeing someone on your own is a normal first step and not a verdict on the marriage.
Couples counselling across the Philippines
Nearly all the couples-qualified practitioners on our listings record Tagalog alongside English 7. Agree the language in advance, particularly if one partner would rather not do difficult conversations in English.
Because the numbers outside the main cities are small, sessions online are often what makes couples work reachable at all.
Quezon City has 4 therapists listed on TherapyRoute who work with couples.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do we have to be in Metro Manila?
The listed couples-qualified practitioners sit mainly in Quezon City and Cebu City7.
Across an archipelago, video is often what makes couples work reachable. Psychotherapy delivered live by video reaches outcomes close to in-person work, across therapies in general8.
Ask whether both of you may join from separate places.
What does marriage counselling cost in the Philippines?
The Ruben M. Tanseco, S.J. Center for Family Ministries in Manila offers pastoral counselling for couples and families, on a donation basis and by appointment9.
Where a practitioner states a fee on their listing, that figure is their own. Ask before the first session. Ask too whether the fee runs per session or per person in the room.
What happens in a marriage counselling session?
The practitioner works with what happens between you, not with one person's account of it.
Practice differs on what comes first. Some approaches open with a formal assessment that combines joint and individual meetings. Others use no set assessment stage1.
In the first meeting you usually talk about why you are coming now, how each of you sees the problem, and what each of you wants changed.
Before you start, ask the practitioner these questions.
- Does the practitioner see each partner alone?
- How will you know the work has finished?
Will PhilHealth pay for marriage counselling?
PhilHealth publishes its benefit packages, inpatient and outpatient10.
Private health cards and employer plans set their own outpatient benefits.
Ask your provider whether outpatient consultations with your practitioner's category are covered, and ask the practitioner what they are able to invoice.
When should we go for marriage counselling?
There is no threshold you have to cross first.
Distress between partners travels. It is associated with mood, anxiety and substance-use difficulties in the partners themselves, and with difficulties for children in the household1.
Couples come with a repeating argument, with an affair, with a decision about whether to stay together, and with none of those. You do not have to agree on the problem before you make contact.
If the problem is safety rather than the relationship
Where a woman or her child is being hurt or threatened by a partner, the law here provides a route that starts close to home.
The route is the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act 11. Under it, the Punong Barangay issues a barangay protection order on the day it is applied for. Barangay officials and law enforcers must respond at once to a call for help, and must enforce the order.
A man abused by his partner can file a case under the Revised Penal Code instead 12.
The same Act obliges the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the local government to provide temporary shelter, counselling and psychosocial services. It also gives a right to legal help from the Public Attorney's Office.
For a child there is the Makabata helpline of the Council for the Welfare of Children 13. It takes reports of abuse and gives referral and psychosocial support.
Of the 4 who say how they work, 4 offer online sessions (100%).
Couples sessions here are offered in English and Tagalog.
