Where the title is protected, it usually takes a postgraduate qualification in psychology and registration with the body that governs the profession.

Counsellors and psychotherapists work by talk therapy as well, and their training runs from a short course to years of supervised practice. In Australia, psychologist is a registered title, and clinical psychologist is an endorsement a registered psychologist can hold. Counsellor and psychotherapist are not registered titles.
