Ms Leezah Hertzmann

Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist

With experience of almost 30 yrs in the NHS and private practice, I see couples and individuals, from young adults to older people in later life. I offer consultations/assessment in the first instance, to talk through what help you might be looking for and whether we can work together. I offer both short and long term therapy depending on what the best approach is for your difficulties. In my private practice I see couples and individuals, from young adults to older people in later life. I offer consultations (assessment), and short and long term therapeutic work. This may be once weekly or less frequently, and where indicated, I work with people more intensively than weekly sessions, over some months or sometimes years. The understanding of the difficulties, and choice of therapeutic approach are discussed beforehand with each person or couple, and reviewed periodically together. Where referral onto other services may be indicated, this is something that would be discussed together so that the right kind of help can be accessed.

About Me

I am an experienced individual and couple psychoanalytic psychotherapist practicing for nearly thirty years in both the NHS and in private practice. I currently work at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust and as the Course Director for the Couple Psychotherapy training at the British Psychotherapy Foundation. Prior to this, I have worked in a variety of settings as a senior clinician, supervisor, senior manager, trainer, and as an advisor to Central Government. I have a particular interest in how relationship difficulties are approached in both individual and couple psychotherapy and have specialist expertise and knowledge in two distinct areas – relationship conflict and issues related to sexuality and gender.

Approach

Some of the difficulties which tend to prompt people to start therapy might include the following: relationship problems at home or work, feeling lost or empty, challenging life transitions, painful life events, being ‘different ‘or feelings of exclusion/not belonging, suffering prejudice, low mood, depression or anxiety, grief and loss, problems with sex, ethical non-monogamy, sexuality and gender, physical illness and the impact on oneself and relationships. Indeed, relationship difficulties are one of the most common causes of unhappiness, which often bring people to therapy and which psychotherapy can help with. The duration and intensity/frequency of your therapy will depend on what we discuss together and consider best for you. Individual therapy can vary in frequency with the number of sessions per week ranging from once or twice a week, to a more intense analytic therapy several times a week. For couple therapy, sessions are usually once weekly. It may be that a less frequent arrangement might be beneficial and this is something which can be discussed. Most couples will experience difficulties in their relationship at some point, often to do with communication or life transitions. Issues which can be helped by couple therapy include the following, though this is not an exhaustive list: loss and bereavement, separation and divorce, decisions about opening up the relationship, ethical non-monogamy (ENM), problems with parenting, the impact of affairs, sexuality and gender, illness and death, fertility and conception, extended family problems, issues to do with cultural difference, impact of prejudice on individuals and couples, adoption and kinship care.
