Jessica Mitchell

Psychoanalyst

“I am a psychoanalyst and psychotherapist in private practice in New York City, working with both individuals and couples. My areas of focus include anxiety and depression, trauma, sexual abuse, PTSD, sexuality, the creative process and impasse, and sleep disorders.”

About me

Before joining the Faculty of the Doctor of Ministry Program at Hebrew Union College and New York University, I served as Dean and Executive Director of the Westchester Institute for Training in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy. I also held the roles of Dean of Studies, Director of Training, and Director of the Psychoanalytic Training Program at the Blanton-Peale Graduate Institute. My background in fine arts and publishing preceded my graduate training in psychology. I hold a Ph.D. in Psychology from The City College of the City University of New York, with a joint track in Experimental Cognition and Clinical Psychology of Neurobehavioral Disorder. I also completed my psychoanalytic training at the Westchester Institute for Training in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy. I remain actively involved in supporting the future of independent psychoanalysis. I serve on the Executive Board of Directors of the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (NAAP). I am also a member of the Executive Committee of the Board and Chair-Elect of the Assembly of Psychoanalytic Institutes (API) for the American Board for Accreditation in Psychoanalysis (ABAP).

Approach

I believe that the most important element in an effective therapy is a genuine connection between the patient and therapist. My approach in therapy is interactive, supportive and empathic. I view psychotherapy as a creative process and my patients as co-partners in the psychotherapeutic process.
