Miss Emma Tynan

Registered Psychotherapist

I am an accredited psychotherapist offering psychotherapy to adults in Athlone and online across Ireland. From September, I will also be offering cross-professional supervision to individuals and professionals across a range of roles.

About Me

I understand that beginning therapy can feel like a significant step, particularly when you have been carrying something difficult for a long time or are unsure where to begin. I offer a supportive and non-judgemental space where you can speak openly, make sense of what you are experiencing and explore what you may need moving forward. I work with adults experiencing anxiety, grief, trauma, relationship difficulties and challenging periods of change. I also have a particular interest in chronic illness, medical trauma and the emotional impact of difficult or uncertain experiences within healthcare. My approach is collaborative and responsive, recognising that each person comes to therapy with their own experiences, needs and way of understanding themselves. I am an APCP-accredited psychotherapist with over eight years’ experience. I hold a Master’s degree in Psychotherapy and Counselling and am a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional Level II (CCTP-II). Before becoming a psychotherapist, I worked in nursing for over 12 years, including almost 10 years in an Emergency Department, and hold a Diploma in Emergency Care. I am also completing a Diploma in Supervision Across Professions and will begin offering cross-professional supervision from September. Through supervision, I provide a reflective and supportive space for professionals to explore their work, its impact on them and the challenges that can arise within their roles.

Approach

As a Psychotherapist I work from an integrative, compassion-based and trauma-informed approach. Rather than using one fixed model of therapy, I draw from different approaches and adapt the work to the individual, what they bring to therapy and what develops within the therapeutic relationship. Compassion is central to my work, particularly when exploring experiences of shame, self-criticism or feeling that you should be coping differently. Therapy offers an opportunity to understand your experiences, emotional responses and patterns with greater curiosity and less judgement. I believe the relationship between therapist and client is an important part of the work. My approach is collaborative and flexible, allowing space for reflection, greater self-understanding and the possibility of change. As a Cross-Professional Supervisor Cross-professional supervision offers professionals from different disciplines a structured space to reflect on their work. The supervisee brings their knowledge and experience of their profession, while I support the reflective process without assuming the role of an expert in their particular field. My approach is holistic, relational and collaborative. Supervision considers the individual, their professional relationships, the responsibilities of their role and the wider organisational context in which they work. It creates space to pause, consider different perspectives and make sense of the opportunities and challenges arising within professional practice. Cross-professional supervision may include reflection on workplace experiences, decision-making, ethical responsibilities, professional development and the impact of the work. It is distinct from therapy, line management and performance review, and is tailored to the needs and professional context of the individual, group or organisation.
