About Me

I am a registered psychologist with AHPRA in Australia and HPCSA in South Africa. I have experience in dealing with trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, relationship issues, identity and self-esteem issues, sexual abuse, ASD, ADHD (neurodiversity affirming), LGBTIQA+ affirming, cultural diversity and chronic health conditions (HIV and cancer), aged care In Australia I have worked with clients referred by medicare, work cover, NDIS, private health, university student counselling and DVA/Open Arms, Queensland health PHN and in aged care. I have worked at group practices as well as in an NGO/charity. In South Africa I have worked in private practice as well as at a university counselling centre consulting with students and training final year psychologists for over 10 years. I have also worked in HIV testing and counselling programmes as well as at a high school in the role of a school psychologist. I have a special interest in assisting with processing the social trauma experienced by people who have experienced social exclusion in areas such as neurodiversity, gender identity, culture, disability, race. I currently work with adults and older teens who are able to consent independently to their own therapy.

Approach

I will normally base the type of therapy on each individual. Sometimes a person may just want a person to talk to who is neutral and non-judgmental. This may prove helpful in a person's life and is generally referred to as counselling. It is a supportive therapy and especially helpful in processing grief or adjusting to a life stressor. Psychotherapy, however, is a more in depth form of treatment that helps a person understand themselves and their reactions better so as to provide more freedom in their way of relating to themselves and others. This also generally has the effect of providing relief for emotional distress. I am trained in several evidence-based approaches, including Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Trauma informed Person-Centred Counselling and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). My approach is trauma informed, neuroaffirming and LGBTIQA+ affirming. I understand psychological difficulties from psychodynamic theory including attachment-based theories within an interpersonal therapy framework.
