What couples counselling is
Couples counselling is talking therapy with both partners present, and the relationship is what is being worked on.
Approaches generally share similar features 1. The counsellor takes an active part and works on the patterns that keep a difficulty going. They build an alliance with both of you at once.
The practitioner is not there to decide between you.
It is not mediation about property or children, which is a separate process with a different purpose. Couples come together, apart, and undecided. Relationship distress is an ordinary reason for adults to seek therapy 2.
How does a session with two people work?
Both partners attend, and any separate contact with one of you should be governed by rules set out in advance 1. Ask for them.
A session is commonly about an hour, often weekly, and many approaches expect a course over months. Early sessions are usually about history and pattern.
Practitioner numbers here are small, so availability shapes what is possible. Sessions online widen the choice beyond your own town. No model has been shown to beat the others for relationship distress 2. The practical questions are fit, language, and when someone can actually see you.
Who is qualified to do this work?
The Health Professions Councils of Namibia regulate under the Health Professions Act. Its Social Work and Psychology Board registers psychologists and social workers. Their e-register lets you confirm that a practitioner is registered 3.
Counselling on its own is not a separate registration here. So check the register for the practitioner's profession, then ask what experience they have of seeing two people together.
Our listings show the category each practitioner states, which is where your check starts.
Titles you will see include Psychologist and Social Worker. Search the register by name at Health Professions Council of Namibia (HPCNA). Check that the name and title match and that the entry is current. If they do not, ask the practitioner why.
How couples counsellors charge in Namibia
Before booking, ask what a session for two people costs and how long it runs. Ask whether there is any arrangement for people who cannot meet the usual fee. Ask the practitioner, not us.
Is couples counselling the right first step?
A joint session is not always the right start.
Moderate to severe aggression between partners is one reason 1. Active alcohol or other substance misuse is another. So are an ongoing affair and psychotic symptoms.
Individual or specialist help usually comes first.
Couples sessions require safety. Where one partner is afraid of the other, the safety route comes first. Seeing someone on your own first is a normal beginning.
Couples counselling in Namibia
The couples-qualified practitioners on our listings record Afrikaans alongside English 4. Their number is small, so the page shows no counts and the practical questions are availability, language and fee.
If nobody listed here can see you soon, widen the search. The country pages and sessions online are the route, rather than a second town.
Frequently Asked Questions
There are only a few practitioners near us. What now?
Our listings hold a small number of couples-qualified practitioners, in Windhoek and on the coast4.
Where nobody listed can see you soon, widen to the country page rather than to a second town. Practitioners working by video are the other route. Psychotherapy delivered live by video reaches outcomes close to in-person work, across therapies in general5.
Ask about waiting time in your first message.
Is premarital counselling a different thing?
Yes. It is preventive work with a relationship that is not in difficulty.
One trial followed engaged and newly married couples for three years. Those given no programme separated at a higher rate than those completing any of the three offered. A single relationship awareness session did as well as the two skills courses6.
Reviewers are cautious about how durable such effects are7.
Does marriage counselling work?
Couple therapy is an effective treatment for relationship distress, and the main models reach broadly similar results2.
Behavioural, cognitive-behavioural, emotionally focused and integrative behavioural couple therapy meet the criteria researchers use for a well-established treatment8.
Those findings describe groups of couples in studies. They are not a forecast about any one relationship, and nobody listed here can promise you an outcome.
What the research does not settle is which approach suits you. Ask a practitioner how they work with two people, and what they do when the two of you want different things.
What happens in a marriage counselling session?
The practitioner works with what happens between you, not with one person's account of it.
Practice differs on what comes first. Some approaches open with a formal assessment that combines joint and individual meetings. Others use no set assessment stage1.
In the first meeting you usually talk about why you are coming now, how each of you sees the problem, and what each of you wants changed.
Before you start, ask the practitioner these questions.
- Does the practitioner see each partner alone?
- How will you know the work has finished?
Will a medical aid fund pay for marriage counselling in Namibia?
Each fund decides. The Namibian Association of Medical Aid Funds lists the registered funds, and benefits are set fund by fund rather than centrally9.
The practitioner's registration category, and how a session with two people is invoiced, both affect a claim.
Ask your fund whether that category is claimable on your benefit option, and ask the practitioner what they are able to put on an invoice.
When should we go for marriage counselling?
There is no threshold you have to cross first.
Distress between partners travels. It is associated with mood, anxiety and substance-use difficulties in the partners themselves, and with difficulties for children in the household1.
Couples come with a repeating argument, with an affair, with a decision about whether to stay together, and with none of those. You do not have to agree on the problem before you make contact.
If the problem is safety rather than the relationship
Where there is violence or fear at home, these routes come before counselling.
LifeLine ChildLine Namibia runs the national toll-free lines for gender-based violence and for children 10. It describes the gender-based violence line as the route for anyone in a violent situation.
The Namibian Police run gender-based violence protection units across the regions 11. They are staffed with police, medical personnel, social workers and legal advisers, and any police station can direct you to one.
The legal route is a protection order under the Combating of Domestic Violence Act. Any person in a domestic relationship may apply 12. So may a family member, police officer, social worker, health worker, teacher, traditional or religious leader, or employer on their behalf.
The application is made at the court where either party lives, works or trades, or where the incident happened. The clerk of court or prosecutor must explain the relief available and help prepare the application.
