What couples counselling is, and what it is not
Couples counselling is talking therapy for two people together, with the relationship itself as the work.
The approaches hold certain features in common 1. A relational frame. An active style. Work on the patterns that keep a difficulty going.
The counsellor does not take a side.
Couples therapy, couples counselling, relationship counselling and marriage counselling all name the same work.
Family mediation is a different service, and in Quebec it carries its own accreditation 2. Relationship distress is an ordinary reason adults seek therapy 3.
How does a session with two people work?
Both partners usually attend. Sessions run about an hour, most often weekly, and most approaches expect months of work rather than a single conversation 1.
Each approach sets its own rules for contact with one partner alone. Ask in your first email how the practitioner handles a private call or message from one of you.
No one model beats the rest for relationship distress 3. Ask how a practitioner works, and whether it fits the way the two of you talk.
Who is qualified to do this work?
Canada has no federal psychology statute. Each province and territory licenses under its own legislation 4. The regulator in each jurisdiction grants the licence 5.
The register to check is where the practitioner works, not where you live. Titles differ across that line.
In Ontario only registrants of named colleges hold the title psychotherapist 6. Quebec registers couple and family therapists as a profession of their own 7. That profession has a practice permit, a published roll, and a route for reporting anyone who uses the title without it.
Of the Canadian registers TherapyRoute lists, no other names couples work as a profession 8. Check the register of the profession the person names. Then ask about experience of seeing two people together.
Protected titles you will see include Registered Psychologist, Registered Psychotherapist and Registered Social Worker.
How couples counselling is charged in Vaughan
You will have to ask. Each practitioner sets their own fee, and we publish no figure we have not measured.
Ask the session length and the fee for two people, often a longer session than an individual one. If the two of you are in different places, ask whether they see couples online.
Where TherapyRoute publishes a cost guide for this country, the country page links to it.
Is couples counselling the right first step?
Joint sessions are not always the right first appointment. A careful practitioner screens before agreeing to see you together. The usual reasons are moderate to severe aggression between partners, active alcohol or other substance misuse, a continuing affair, and psychotic symptoms 1. Individual or specialist treatment comes first.
If one of you is afraid of the other, that is a safety question first. Going alone is a sensible beginning, not a sign you have given up on the relationship.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does couples therapy cost in Canada?
Our guide to what therapy costs in Canada sets out the usual ranges; ask each practitioner what a couples session costs.
Four things move a fee. The practitioner's registration category, their experience, the session length, and whether you meet in a room or online.
The Canada Health Act defines insured health services as hospital services, physician services and surgical-dental services9. Counselling outside a hospital, from someone who is not a physician, is not one of them.
Lower-fee routes exist. The federal government lists mental health services by province and territory, and affordable counselling appears among them10. University psychology clinics attached to a graduate programme see couples under supervision, some at a reduced fee11.
Where a practitioner states a fee on their listing, that figure is their own. Ask before the first session, and ask whether the fee runs per session or per person in the room.
Does couples therapy work?
Couple therapy is an effective treatment for relationship distress, and the main models reach broadly similar results3.
Behavioural, cognitive-behavioural, emotionally focused and integrative behavioural couple therapy meet the criteria researchers use for a well-established treatment12.
Those findings describe groups of couples in studies. They are not a forecast about any one relationship, and nobody listed here can promise you an outcome.
Canada's national psychology association names the questions to put to a practitioner, among them which approach they use and how it works13. Ask that, and what they do when the two of you want different things.
What happens in a couples therapy session?
The practitioner works with what happens between you, not with one person's account of it.
Practice differs on what comes first. Some approaches open with a formal assessment that combines joint and individual meetings. Others use no set assessment stage1.
Canada's national psychology association calls a first visit information gathering, on the problem and on each person's history, and says that phase can run past one session13.
Ask before you start whether the practitioner sees each partner alone. Ask how you will know the work is done.
When should we go for couples therapy?
There is no threshold you have to cross first. Relationship distress is one of the commonest reasons adults seek psychotherapy3.
Distress between partners travels. It is associated with mood, anxiety and substance-use difficulties in the partners themselves, and with difficulties for children in the household1.
Canada's national psychology association says you can refer yourself to a psychologist in private practice, though a hospital psychologist may need a physician's referral14.
Couples come with a repeating argument, with an affair, with a decision about staying together, and with none of those. You do not have to agree on the problem before you make contact.
If the problem is safety rather than the relationship
Where there is violence or fear at home, these routes come before counselling.
The Divorce Act defines family violence in the statute itself 15. It covers conduct that is violent or threatening, and patterns of coercive control. It covers conduct that makes a family member fear for their safety.
The definition holds whether or not the conduct is a criminal offence. It names psychological abuse and financial abuse.
The Criminal Code names no specific offence of family violence 16. Most acts of family violence are crimes in Canada. Several provinces and territories add civil family violence legislation.
Under it a court may grant an emergency intervention order. Such an order can let the person at risk stay in the home, and restrain the other from making contact. Child protection runs under provincial and territorial law.
The Public Health Agency of Canada lists family violence services by province and territory 17. A national shelter map sits beside them.
Of the 4 who say how they work, 3 offer online sessions.
Couples work here is offered by family therapists, psychiatrists and psychoanalysts.
