Trans Day of (visibility) Awareness
Trans Day of Visibility - And how to shift our engagements to create safer, affirming, and accessible space for the trans, non-binary and non-cis communities.
Trans Day of Visibility is a day to represent folx who hold identities that differ from cis identities (cis is an identity that one holds that means that a person’s identity aligns with the identity assigned at birth).
However, calling this day trans or transgender day of visibility is not inclusive of all members of the community it claims to represent.
Shifting the language to Trans & Non-Binary Day of Awareness creates more inclusion.
Here is why:
- Not all trans folx identities fall within the gender spectrum. Therefore shifting the term transgender to trans creates inclusivity of all trans folx, not just the binary trans folx and/or the folx whose identities are within a gender spectrum.
- Awareness versus visibility emphasizes awareness and knowledge versus the sense of sight, and is, therefore, more inclusive of members of our community who do not have that sense.

I hope ya'll can make this shift so we can continue to create more and more spaces for ALL members of our non-cis community.

Believing us, trusting us, paying us for our labor, loving us while we are here, hiring us, showing us love in ways that we communicate what love is and not in the way that you communicate love, including us in conversations, using the names we share with you, using the pronouns we share with you, not questioning what restrooms we use, letting us dress how we want, not outing us (outing is when you share information about a person’s identity without the person’s permission), supporting our businesses/services, hiring us, advocating for us, confronting people who say transphobic things, and so much more.
Please come check out the Do Something Identity(ies) International virtual conference dedicated to shifting the world's global standards of accessible, affirming and safer care for trans, non-binary and many more non-cis identities. Come make history with us! VanEthanLevy . com / Conference
