Suicide Hotlines and Crisis Lines in Russia

A helpline is a place to talk to someone when you are struggling, before or instead of a crisis. The lines on this page are answered by psychologists, trained volunteers or medical staff, depending on the service. If you are not in Russia, the worldwide list is organised by country.

What you share is kept private in almost all cases; if a counsellor believes a life is in immediate danger, they may arrange urgent help. What each service costs is set out beside it below, and where an organisation publishes no call cost we say so rather than guess. One entry publishes its own privacy terms, which differ from the others, and they are printed beside it.

Two things are worth knowing before you read the list. There is one helpline here that is free and answers at any hour in 82 of the country's 87 regions, and it is the children's and parents' line; the only other national round-the-clock line verified is for cancer patients and their families. And no service on this page publishes a list of the languages it answers in, so a reader who does not speak Russian cannot tell from any of these pages which line will be able to talk to them.

112, 103 and the other emergency numbers

None of these numbers appeared anywhere on the previous version of this page. The Ministry of Emergency Situations publishes them on its own regional directorate pages, and states plainly that dialling them costs nothing: «Внимание! Набор экстренных служб является бесплатным», dialling the emergency services is free.

Of 112 itself, the Ministry's Moscow Region directorate writes: «Номер 112 доступен бесплатно как с фиксированных, так и мобильных телефонов, в том числе и с общественных телефонов-автоматов», the number 112 is available free of charge from fixed and mobile telephones, including public payphones. It reaches the fire service, emergency response, the police, the ambulance service, the gas emergency service and anti-terror.

One thing about 112 is worth knowing on a page like this one. The same government page lists among Система-112's own tasks «обеспечение дистанционной психологической поддержки лицу, обратившемуся по номеру «112»», providing remote psychological support to the person who has called 112. So 112 is not only a route to a vehicle.

Hours: the St Petersburg directorate publishes the phrase «Номера доступны в любой момент времени, даже при финансовой блокировке услуг», the numbers are available at any moment, even when services are financially blocked. That is the phrase the government uses, and this page uses no other.

Languages: the same government page lists «возможность приема вызовов (сообщений о происшествиях) на иностранных языках», the capability of receiving calls in foreign languages, among the system's functions. It names no language and no region where that capability is live, so nothing more is claimed here.

Детский телефон доверия, 8 800 2000 122 and 124, for children, teenagers and parents

The all-Russian children's helpline is run by the Фонд поддержки детей, находящихся в трудной жизненной ситуации, the Foundation for the Support of Children in Difficult Life Situations, and has operated since 2010. It is a national service and it is the one line on this page that is free, general and round the clock across most of the country, which is why it leads.

In the Foundation's own words: «Экстренную психологическую помощь детям и родителям обеспечивают 210 региональных служб детского телефона доверия, работающих под едиными общероссийскими номерами на территории 87 субъектов Российской Федерации», emergency psychological help for children and parents is provided by 210 regional helpline services working under single all-Russian numbers across 87 subjects of the Russian Federation. A call is routed automatically to the service for the region it comes from, and passed to a second service in the same region if the first line is busy, until a psychologist answers.

On anonymity, the Foundation states: «Анонимность — общение с консультантом (психологом) детского телефона доверия полностью анонимно: отсутствует определитель номера, можно представиться вымышленным именем», the conversation is completely anonymous, there is no caller ID, and you may give an invented name.

Hours: round the clock in 82 of the country's 87 regions, in the Foundation's own figures: «В 82 регионах экстренная психологическая помощь по детскому телефону доверия оказывается в круглосуточном режиме». In the remaining five it is not, and the Foundation does not say which five.

Cost: free, in the Foundation's own words: a call of any length is «абсолютно бесплатный» from any mobile or fixed telephone.

Телефон психологической помощи МЧС России, +7 (495) 989-50-50

The ФГБУ «Центр экстренной психологической помощи МЧС России», the Centre for Emergency Psychological Help of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, is a federal state institution created in 1999. Its own site prints this number in the header of every page under the label «Телефон психологической помощи», psychological help telephone. The Centre employs, in its own words, «более 320 специалистов», more than 320 specialists, across a head office and branches in Khabarovsk, Krasnoyarsk, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov-on-Don, Pyatigorsk, Sevastopol and St Petersburg.

What it says it does is narrower than a general helpline: it «координирует и осуществляет задачи по оказанию экстренной психологической помощи пострадавшим при чрезвычайных ситуациях», coordinates and carries out the tasks of providing emergency psychological help to those affected in emergency situations. No page we read describes it as a public crisis line, and this page does not describe it as one either.

The Centre also runs an anonymous online service where a question is put in writing and answered publicly. Its own topic list includes «Суицидальные мысли и намерения, тревога, страхи», suicidal thoughts and intentions, anxiety and fears.

Hours: not published. No hours appear on the Centre's own site or on the ministry's institution page, and none is inferred here.

Cost: not published. This is a Moscow geographic number rather than a toll-free 8-800 one, so a caller elsewhere pays their operator's rate.

Служба «Ясное утро», 8 800 100 0191, for cancer patients and their families

Служба «Ясное утро», the Clear Morning service, has run a helpline for cancer patients since 2007. In its own words: «Служба «Ясное утро» бесплатно оказывает помощь онкологическим пациентам и их семьям», the service provides free help to cancer patients and their families. Its own hotline page adds: «Круглосуточно и бесплатно мы принимаем звонки со всей России. Ежемесячно к нам поступает более 3000 обращений», we take calls round the clock and free of charge from all over Russia, and receive more than 3,000 calls a month.

It is here because it is national and answers round the clock, and its scope is in the heading so nobody dials it expecting something else.

Телефон неотложной психологической помощи, 051, Moscow

The ГБУ «Московская служба психологической помощи населению», the Moscow Psychological Help Service, is a Moscow city institution. Its page addresses the reader directly: «Если Вы чувствуете, что находитесь в острой кризисной ситуации, испытываете переживания, с которыми не в силах справиться самостоятельно, находитесь под влиянием травматического события, потеряли близкого человека, стали жертвой чрезвычайной ситуации, обратитесь за неотложной психологической помощью». If you feel you are in an acute crisis, are carrying feelings you cannot manage alone, are under the weight of a traumatic event, have lost someone close to you, or have become the victim of an emergency, ask for urgent psychological help.

Alongside the telephone it runs a mobile sector that comes to people in person, for acute grief, for victims of violent acts and for people living with post-traumatic stress. It covers Moscow.

Hours: the 051 line is «круглосуточно», round the clock, in the service's own words. The enquiry line runs «ежедневно с 9:00 до 21:00», daily from 09:00 to 21:00.

Cost: two different statements, and they are not collapsed into one. From a landline on 051 the call is free, in the service's own words. From a mobile on 8 (495) 051, «услуги оператора связи оплачиваются по тарифам на исходящие звонки», the operator's charges apply at outgoing-call rates.

Московская скорая психиатрическая помощь, (495) 625-31-01, Moscow

This is the dispatch line for an emergency psychiatric team in Moscow, and it is an emergency medical service rather than an anonymous counselling line. The Moscow Department of Health's own psychoneurological centre names it in answer to its own question about what to do when help is needed urgently: «Позвонить по телефону Московской скорой психиатрической помощи +7 (495) 625-31-01 или по телефону Московской скорой помощи 103. Вам окажут своевременную помощь». Call the Moscow emergency psychiatric service on this number, or the Moscow ambulance service on 103, and you will be given timely help.

Телефон доверия, Центр им. Г. Е. Сухаревой, 8 (800) 222-05-57

The Сухарева Centre is a Moscow Department of Health institution for the mental health of children and adolescents, running consultative and inpatient departments alongside a parents' club and a patients' club. This number is labelled «Телефон доверия», helpline, in the header and footer of every page of its own site. It was absent from the previous version of this page.

The number is a toll-free 8-800 one, and 8-800 numbers are dialled without a regional code. The centre publishes no sentence claiming the line serves the whole country, so none is claimed here.

Hours: not published for this line. The centre publishes hours for its enquiry desk and its admissions department and none beside the helpline, and nothing is inferred from the other two.

Cost: not published. An 8-800 number is toll-free in Russia by convention, which is not the same as the centre saying so, and it does not.

Центр «Сёстры», +7 (499) 901-02-01, sexual violence

Центр «Сёстры», the Sisters Centre, describes itself as «Центр помощи пережившим сексуализированное насилие и их близким», a centre helping people who have survived sexualised violence and those close to them. It runs a helpline, a crisis mailbox, consultations with psychologists and support groups. It was absent from the previous version of this page.

ПОЛИНА, кризисный центр для женщин, (812) 327-30-00, St Petersburg

The Санкт-Петербургская Региональная Общественная Организация «ПОЛИНА. Кризисный центр для женщин» was founded in 1992 in St Petersburg. In its own words it «оказывает помощь совершеннолетним женщинам, столкнувшимся с различными формами насилия», helps adult women who have encountered various forms of violence. Beyond the helpline it runs support groups and an automated system that helps a woman draft applications to law-enforcement bodies and the magistrates' courts.

Hours: «Работает c 11:00 до 18:00. По будням и воскресеньям консультирует психолог, по субботам — юрист». Open from 11:00 to 18:00; on weekdays and Sundays a psychologist advises, on Saturdays a lawyer.

Privacy, in the centre's own words, and it differs from the other lines here: «Осуществляя звонок на телефон доверия Вы даете согласие на обработку Ваших персональных данных», by calling the helpline you give consent to the processing of your personal data. This is not an anonymous line in the way the children's helpline describes itself.

Молодёжный телефон доверия, +7 (863) 237-48-48, Rostov-on-Don

The Автономная некоммерческая организация психологической поддержки «Молодежный телефон доверия» has run in Rostov-on-Don since 1995. In its own words: «Мы помогаем каждому, кто нуждается в доверительном и дружеском общении. Каждому, кто хочет разобраться в себе или трудной жизненной ситуации, получить поддержку и понимание». We help everyone who needs a trusting and friendly conversation, everyone who wants to make sense of themselves or of a difficult situation, and to be supported and understood. It adds that people often come to it about depression, or about addiction, violence or bullying.

On privacy it states: «Мы соблюдаем анонимность и строгую конфиденциальность. Разговоры не записываются, переписки не сохраняются». We keep anonymity and strict confidentiality; conversations are not recorded and correspondence is not kept.

Hours: not published for the telephone. The organisation publishes hours for its chat only, «ежедневно с 16:00 до 22:00 по МСК», daily from 16:00 to 22:00 Moscow time, and this page does not extend those to the line.

Телефон и чат доверия для подростков, by chat

This is a volunteer counselling service for adolescents, organised by the фонд «Новые шаги». Its own page states that «Наши волонтеры-консультанты прошли обучение и работают под руководством опытных психологов», its volunteer counsellors are trained and work under the supervision of experienced psychologists, and that it helps people «независимо от их сексуальной ориентации и гендерной идентичности», regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity.

It has no telephone number to dial. You write in the chat, and if you would rather talk, you say so there and they call you back.

Cost: «Мы волонтерский проект и оказываем помощь бесплатно», a volunteer project giving help free of charge.

While you are waiting to be answered

A line that is open can still be busy, and several of the services above publish no hours at all. If you are waiting, try to stay with someone you trust, or ask someone to sit with you until the call connects.

If you have anything near you that you could use to harm yourself, put it somewhere harder to reach, or ask someone else to hold it for you. Distance and time both help.

If waiting is not possible, dial 112, or 103 for an ambulance, or go to a hospital emergency department. You do not need an appointment and you do not need to explain yourself well.

If you are worried about someone else

Ask them directly. Asking someone whether they are thinking of suicide does not put the idea there, and it often comes as a relief to be asked plainly.

Listen more than you advise. You do not need the right words, and you are not expected to fix anything.

If they are willing, offer to sit with them while they phone one of the numbers above, or to make the call together. If they are in immediate danger, treat it as you would any medical emergency.

Supporting someone through this is heavy, and it is reasonable to want support of your own. The children's helpline above takes calls from parents as well as from children, and says so in its own name.
