Suicide hotlines and crisis lines in Moldova, with every number checked at source. In an emergency, dial 112.

IF YOU ARE IN CRISIS, PLEASE READ THIS FIRST. If you are in immediate danger or thinking about harming yourself, get help now. In Moldova, dial 112, the single national emergency number for ambulance, police and fire. Calls are free from any fixed or mobile phone, the line is answered 24 hours a day, and 112 can also be reached by SMS. You can also go to the emergency department of your nearest hospital. For readers outside Moldova, there is a worldwide list of emergency numbers and a list of helplines and suicide hotlines worldwide.

A helpline is a place to talk to someone when you are struggling, before or instead of a crisis. The lines on this page are answered by psychologists or trained counsellors, depending on the service. If you are not in Moldova, the worldwide list is organised by country.

What you share is kept private in almost all cases; if a counsellor believes a life is in immediate danger, they may arrange urgent help. What each service costs is set out beside it below, because the two telephone lines state that calls are free and the chat service does not publish what it costs.

TherapyRoute is a directory. We do not answer calls or messages ourselves, so please use the numbers below rather than contacting us if you need someone now.

Moldova has no general adult crisis telephone line that answers around the clock. The harmonised European emotional-support number used in some other countries has no operator in Moldova: the telecoms regulator's own announcement still lists it as open for allocation. The only verified 24/7 counselling telephone line for adults is scoped to women and girls affected by violence. The only suicide-specific service is a volunteer chat-and-email service with no telephone number. If you are an adult outside those groups and need to speak to someone now, 112 at the top of this page is answered at any hour, a hospital emergency department is open at any hour, and the worldwide list includes services in other countries that take contact online. That is a gap in what is available, not a reason to face this alone: the people behind those doors and numbers are there to help you.

112, the emergency number, and what it covers

Moldova runs one consolidated emergency number for all services, so there are no separate numbers to remember for ambulance, police or fire.

All emergencies: 112

The service's own site says: "Call 112 when you need an ambulance, police or firefighters. 112 is the single emergency call number, available free of charge across the whole country. 112 can be called 24 hours a day from any fixed or mobile phone. 112 is also available by SMS." The same page states that emergency intervention is requested only through 112, not through websites or other telephone numbers.

Telefonul de Încredere pentru Femei și Fete, 0 8008 8008, for women and girls

Telefonul de Încredere pentru Femei și Fete (the Trust Line for Women and Girls) was founded by the Centrul Internațional „La Strada" and has run for 16 years. Since 2017 it has been a national public service financed by the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection. It is the only verified telephone counselling line for adults in Moldova that is answered 24 hours a day, and it is for women and girls.

The line takes reports of family violence and violence against women, including digital violence. In the ministry's own words, it "offers free telephone assistance, psychological counselling and legal guidance". La Strada's own platform invites callers to "Speak now with a real counsellor (24/7)".

Tel: 0 8008 8008

Chat: eviolenta.md, La Strada's own platform, connected to the line.

Email: trustline@lastrada.md

Hours: 24/7, in the platform's own words: "consilier real (24/7)", a real counsellor around the clock.

Cost: free, in the ministry's own words: "asistență telefonică gratuită", free telephone assistance.

The service does not publish which languages it answers in.

Telefonul Copilului, 116 111, for children and young people

Serviciul „Telefonul Copilului" is the national free child helpline, running since 4 June 2014. It is managed by the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection and implemented by A.O. Centrul Național de Formare Asistență Consiliere Educație din Moldova „CNFACEM". A team of psychologists answers.

The line is for children and young people, and also for parents and adults calling about a child. The ministry describes it as "offering psychological counselling to children and parents facing difficulties or at-risk situations". It takes reports of violations of children's rights and refers cases to the competent authorities.

The ministry's own communiqué states: "The 'Child's Telephone' Service is available 24/24 and can be called free of charge, confidentially and anonymously from any fixed or mobile telephone network on the short number 116 111 and on the chat on the web page: telefonulcopilului.md".

Tel: 116 111

Chat: telefonulcopilului.md, the live chat on the organisation's own site.

Email: telefonul.copilului@social.gov.md

Hours: 24/24, in the organisation's own words: "O echipă de psihologi sunt 24/24 la dispoziția DVS!", a team of psychologists at your disposal around the clock.

Cost: free, in the organisation's own words: "Apelurile sunt gratuite", calls are free, from any fixed or mobile network across the whole country.

The service does not publish which languages it answers in.

Linia Verde pentru Prevenirea Suicidului, by chat and email

Linia Verde pentru Prevenirea Suicidului (the Green Line for Suicide Prevention) is run by the Asociația Obștească „ALTRUISM" and is, in its own words, "the first and only emotional-support service in the Republic of Moldova dedicated to open and non-judgemental communication about suicide, suicidal thoughts and any other realities around this sad phenomenon." Volunteer counsellors answer, and it is the only service on this page open to any adult.

Despite its name, this is an online service: it publishes no telephone number. Contact is by anonymous chat on its site or by email.

Chat: pentruviata.md, the anonymous chat on the organisation's own site.

Email: AJUTOR@PENTRUVIATA.MD

Hours: not published. The organisation invites you to write "at any hour of day or night", but it does not state when a counsellor answers. If you write and no reply comes, 112 at the top of this page is answered at any hour.

Cost: not published.

Languages: in the organisation's own words: "You can speak with us in Romanian, English or Russian."

While you are waiting to be answered

A line that is open can still be busy, and one of the services above does not publish its hours. If you are waiting, try to stay with someone you trust, or ask someone to sit with you until the call or chat connects.

If you have anything near you that you could use to harm yourself, put it somewhere harder to reach, or ask someone else to hold it for you. Distance and time both help.

If waiting is not possible, dial 112 or go to a hospital emergency department. You do not need an appointment and you do not need to explain yourself well.

If you are worried about someone else

Ask them directly. Asking someone whether they are thinking of suicide does not put the idea there, and it often comes as a relief to be asked plainly.

Listen more than you advise. You do not need the right words, and you are not expected to fix anything.

If they are willing, offer to sit with them while they contact one of the services above, or to make the call together. If they are in immediate danger, treat it as you would any medical emergency.

Supporting someone through this is heavy, and it is reasonable to want support of your own. If you are an adult worried about a child, Telefonul Copilului on 116 111 also takes calls from parents and other adults calling about a child.

For services in other countries, see the list of helplines and suicide hotlines worldwide.
