Suicide Hotlines and Crisis Lines in Greece

A helpline is a place to talk to someone when you are struggling, before or instead of a crisis. The lines on this page are answered by psychologists, social workers or other trained staff, depending on the service. If you are not in Greece, the worldwide list is organised by country.

What you share is kept private in almost all cases; if a counsellor believes a life is in immediate danger, they may arrange urgent help. What each service costs is set out beside it below, because in Greece most of these numbers are free but one important one is not.

Emergency numbers, and what each one is for

Greece's main emergency number is 112, the European emergency line. The Greek state's own page says that "112 calls are free and can be made from a landline or mobile telephone (even without any credit) and from a public phone box (without a phonecard)". It adds that the service "is staffed by specially trained operators who speak at least three languages (Greek, English and French)".

Police: 100, the Hellenic Police.

Ambulance: 166, the Medical Emergency Service (EKAB).

Fire: 199, the Hellenic Fire Service.

Coast guard: 108, the Hellenic Coast Guard.

Γραμμή Παρέμβασης για την Αυτοκτονία 1018, the suicide intervention line

The Γραμμή Παρέμβασης για την Αυτοκτονία (Suicide Intervention Line) is run by the NGO ΚΛΙΜΑΚΑ (Klimaka), with the support of the Ministry of Health. It has operated since 2007, and mental health professionals answer the calls.

The line is for people who are thinking about suicide, people who have attempted suicide in the past, people with self-destructive behaviour, and people who are bereaved or worried about someone close to them.

On privacy and cost, Klimaka's own words are "Οι κλήσεις είναι ανώνυμες και εμπιστευτικές", meaning calls are anonymous and confidential, and "με αστική χρέωση", meaning the call is charged at a local rate. This is the one line on this page that is not free.

Klimaka also asks callers to persist if the line seems not to answer and there is no engaged tone, because the professionals who answer may be occupied with another call. Stay on the line, or try again.

Coverage: national. Klimaka states it accepts calls from mobile or landline, from all areas of Greece.

Cost: a local-rate call, in Klimaka's own words "με αστική χρέωση". Not free.

Γραμμή Ψυχοκοινωνικής Υποστήριξης 10306, the state psychosocial support line

The Γραμμή Ψυχοκοινωνικής Υποστήριξης (Psychosocial Support Line) 10306 is a state line run under the Ministry of Health. In its own words, "Η Γραμμή 10306 λειτουργεί δωρεάν και ανώνυμα όλο το 24ωρο", the line operates free and anonymously around the clock. It describes itself as being for citizens of any gender and any age, for any mental health matter that concerns them, such as anxiety, family issues, bereavement or a panic attack.

The line is menu-driven, and the options keep different hours. Psychological support, option 1, is answered around the clock. The options for psychosocial care, and for violence and aggression involving children and adolescents, are answered from 09:00 to 21:00.

Γραμμή Άμεσης Κοινωνικής Βοήθειας 197, for adults in crisis

The Γραμμή Άμεσης Κοινωνικής Βοήθειας (Immediate Social Assistance Line) 197 is run by the Εθνικό Κέντρο Κοινωνικής Αλληλεγγύης (E.K.K.A., the National Centre for Social Solidarity). Social workers and psychologists answer.

The government page for the line says it "λειτουργεί δωρεάν και 24 ώρες το 24ωρο", operates free and 24 hours a day, "offering immediate psychosocial support to adults in crisis or facing difficulties of a social or psychological nature". It covers domestic violence, older adults at risk, people in crisis or at risk of harm, trafficking victims, and people affected by disasters. It also refers callers on to E.K.K.A. services and other social-care bodies.

Γραμμή SOS 15900, for women subjected to violence

The Γραμμή SOS 15900 is run by the Γενική Γραμματεία Ισότητας των Φύλων (General Secretariat for Gender Equality). It is for women subjected to violence, and for third parties calling on their behalf. Psychologists and sociologists answer.

In the service's own words, it is "µια υπηρεσία εθνικής εµβέλειας", a service of national reach, staffed "σε 24ωρη βάση, 365 µέρες το χρόνο", on a 24-hour basis, 365 days a year. It gives psychosocial counselling, information on legal matters and gender equality, and referral to shelters, counselling centres and health services.

Εθνική Γραμμή για τα Παιδιά SOS 1056, the national children's line

The Εθνική Γραμμή για τα Παιδιά SOS 1056 (National Line for Children SOS 1056) is run by Το Χαμόγελο του Παιδιού (The Smile of the Child). The organisation states the line is available to any child and any adult for support on matters concerning them. The Greek state lists 1056 among its national emergency numbers, and a 112 call can be routed to it.

In the organisation's own words, the line "είναι στελεχωμένη αποκλειστικά από εξειδικευμένους Κοινωνικούς Λειτουργούς και Ψυχολόγους", staffed exclusively by specialised social workers and psychologists, and is "διαθέσιμη πανελλαδικά", available nationwide.

Ευρωπαϊκή Γραμμή Υποστήριξης Παιδιών 116111, for children and adults

The Ευρωπαϊκή Γραμμή Υποστήριξης Παιδιών 116111 (European Child Helpline 116111) is also run by Το Χαμόγελο του Παιδιού, as Greece's part of the European children's helpline network. Psychologists answer.

Read the scope before you decide it is not for you. The organisation's own words are that it "παρέχει δωρεάν ψυχολογική υποστήριξη σε παιδιά αλλά και σε ενήλικες", provides free psychological support to children and also to adults. The state's page adds that calls are free even without any credit, and from a public phone box without a phonecard. For refugee and migrant children, the state records that the organisation runs volunteer Arabic and Farsi interpreters.

Εθνική Γραμμή Παιδικής Προστασίας 1107, the child protection line

The Εθνική Γραμμή Παιδικής Προστασίας (National Child Protection Line) 1107 is the second E.K.K.A. line. Social workers and psychologists answer. It is for children, adolescents and adults who want to report or discuss psychosocial difficulties affecting minors. It gives telephone counselling and support to minors, parents and professionals, and passes reports of children at risk to the prosecuting authorities.

Hours: not published. The government page for the line prints its staffing and cost, but no hours.

Cost: in the page's own words, "Οι κλήσεις είναι δωρεάν από σταθερό και κινητό τηλέφωνο για όλους τους πολίτες", calls are free from landline and mobile for all citizens.

Γραμμή Ψυχολογικής Στήριξης 11528 ΔΙΠΛΑ ΣΟΥ, for LGBTQI people

The Γραμμή Ψυχολογικής Στήριξης 11528 ΔΙΠΛΑ ΣΟΥ is a psychological support line for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people, their families, and teachers. It is also for anyone with questions about sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. In its own words, "Σε κάθε τηλεφώνημα απαντούν αποκλειστικά εξειδικευμένες/οι ψυχολόγοι", every call is answered exclusively by specialised psychologists. It operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs.

This line keeps office hours, so outside them use the round-the-clock lines above.

Coverage: 11528 is a national short code, but its own page does not state its geographic reach.

While you are waiting to be answered

A line that is open can still be busy, and Klimaka itself asks callers to 1018 to persist. If you are waiting, try to stay with someone you trust, or ask someone to sit with you until the call connects.

If you have anything near you that you could use to harm yourself, put it somewhere harder to reach, or ask someone else to hold it for you. Distance and time both help.

If waiting is not possible, dial 112 or 166, or go to a hospital emergency department. You do not need an appointment and you do not need to explain yourself well.

If you are worried about someone else

Ask them directly. Asking someone whether they are thinking of suicide does not put the idea there, and it often comes as a relief to be asked plainly.

Listen more than you advise. You do not need the right words, and you are not expected to fix anything.

If they are willing, offer to sit with them while they call one of the numbers above, or to make the call together. The 1018 line says plainly that it is also for people worried about someone close to them. If they are in immediate danger, treat it as you would any medical emergency.

Supporting someone through this is heavy, and it is reasonable to want support of your own. The same lines are open to you.
