Suicide hotlines and crisis lines in Chile, with every number checked at source. In an emergency, dial 131, 133 or 132.

IF YOU ARE IN CRISIS, PLEASE READ THIS FIRST. If you are in immediate danger or thinking about harming yourself, get help now. Chile has no single emergency number: dial 131 for SAMU, the medical emergency and ambulance service, 133 for Carabineros (the national police), or 132 for the fire brigade. You can also go to the emergency department of your nearest hospital. Whether these calls are free is not published on the government pages we checked. For readers outside Chile, there is a worldwide list of emergency numbers and a list of helplines and suicide hotlines worldwide.

A helpline is a place to talk to someone when you are struggling, before or instead of a crisis. The lines on this page are answered by psychologists, health professionals or trained counsellors, depending on the service. If you are not in Chile, the worldwide list is organised by country.

What you share is kept private in almost all cases; if a counsellor believes a life is in immediate danger, they may arrange urgent help. What each service costs is set out beside it below, because most of these lines are free but one charges the equivalent of a local call.

TherapyRoute is a directory. We do not answer calls or messages ourselves, so please use the numbers below rather than contacting us if you need someone now.

Emergency numbers, and what each one is for

Chile does not use a single unified emergency number. Each service has its own three-digit number, and government pages list them side by side.

Medical emergency and ambulance (SAMU): 131

Fire brigade (Bomberos): 132

Police (Carabineros de Chile): 133

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes them as "131 = Ambulancia, atención médica / 132 = Bomberos, accidentes o incendios / 133 = Carabineros de Chile (seguridad pública)": 131 for an ambulance and medical attention, 132 for the fire brigade, accidents or fires, and 133 for Carabineros, the national police. Whether these calls are free is not published on the government pages we checked.

Línea de Prevención del Suicidio *4141, the national suicide-prevention line

Línea de Prevención del Suicidio *4141 (Suicide Prevention Line), also called "No estás solo, no estás sola" ("You are not alone"), is run by Chile's Ministry of Health. It is answered by psychologists, and in the ministry's own words it "está disponible para quienes presenten pensamientos o intentos suicidas", available to those experiencing suicidal thoughts or attempts. The ministry says a caller "podrán contactarse con un psicólogo que los escuchará y ayudará", can reach a psychologist who will listen and help.

This number works from mobile phones only. The ministry's instruction is to call "desde celulares de cualquier compañía", from mobiles of any carrier, and no landline route is published. If you are on a landline or fixed phone, call Salud Responde on 600 360 77 77 instead; it answers around the clock and its team includes psychologists.

Tel: *4141 (from a mobile phone, any carrier)

Hours: "de lunes a domingo, las 24 horas del día", Monday to Sunday, 24 hours a day.

Cost: free, in the ministry's own words: "La línea de prevención del suicidio es gratuita."

Salud Responde, 600 360 77 77, the national health line

Salud Responde is the Ministry of Health's multichannel health platform, answering "en todo el país", across the whole country. Its published service list includes "Consejería en salud mental y apoyo en situaciones de crisis", mental-health counselling and support in crisis situations. It is answered by a multidisciplinary team the programme lists as doctors, psychologists, nurses, midwives, physiotherapists and nutritionists, and ChileAtiende states that where necessary a professional will coordinate transfer to a healthcare centre.

Unlike *4141, this line can be called "desde teléfonos fijos y celulares", from fixed phones and mobiles, so it is the route for a reader on a landline.

Tel: 600 360 77 77

Hours: phone line "las 24 horas del día, los 365 días del año", 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Its digital channels keep narrower hours: "Lunes a jueves: 09:30 a 17:00 hrs / Viernes: 09:30 a 16:00 hrs", Monday to Thursday 09:30 to 17:00 and Friday 09:30 to 16:00.

Cost: not free. ChileAtiende states "Equivalente a una llamada local", equivalent to a local call.

Languages: Spanish; ChileAtiende also publishes "atención en kreyol" (Haitian Creole) and "lengua de señas por videollamada" (Chilean sign language by video call) as separate channels, whose own hours are not published on the page we checked.

Fono Drogas y Alcohol 1412, for alcohol and other drug use

Fono Drogas y Alcohol 1412 (Drugs and Alcohol Line) is run by SENDA, the national service for the prevention and rehabilitation of alcohol and drug use. The government describes it as "un servicio de orientación telefónica 24/7, gratuito, anónimo y confidencial para personas que presentan consumo de alcohol y otras drogas o sus familias", a 24/7 telephone orientation service, free, anonymous and confidential, for people with alcohol and other drug use or their families. The same page describes it as the doorway to more than 500 fully free treatment centres.

Tel: 1412

Hours: "24/7", in the government's own words.

Cost: "gratuito", free.

Fono Orientación y Ayuda 1455, for women experiencing violence

Fono Orientación y Ayuda en Violencia contra las Mujeres 1455 (Orientation and Help Line for Violence against Women) is run by the Ministerio de la Mujer y la Equidad de Género (Ministry of Women and Gender Equity). In the government's words, the line's four digits "buscan orientar a las mujeres víctimas de violencia y testigos", orient women who have experienced violence, and witnesses.

Tel: 1455

Hours: "las 24 horas del día, los 365 días del año", 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Cost: "de forma gratuita, incluso si no tienen saldo en su celular", free, even with no credit on your mobile.

Fonoinfancia, 800 200 818, for parents and caregivers

Fonoinfancia, run by Fundación Integra, is a line for adults, not one children dial themselves. On its own page it is "un programa de asesoría psicológica especializada en crianza respetuosa, no presencial gratuito, confidencial* y de cobertura nacional, con 24 años de funcionamiento, atendido por un equipo de psicólogas y psicólogos", a programme of specialised psychological advice on respectful parenting, remote, free, confidential and with national coverage, running 24 years, answered by a team of psychologists. It is for mothers, fathers and caregivers of children under 15: parenting, grief, separation, and mood and behaviour changes in children.

Its own footnote bounds the confidentiality: it holds in all cases except where there are grave rights violations or risk to life, and calls and chats may be recorded.

Tel: 800 200 818

WhatsApp: +56 9 3251 4935

Chat: web chat at fonoinfancia.cl

Hours: "de lunes a viernes entre las 08:30 y 19:00 horas", Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 19:00.

Cost: "gratuito", free.

Línea Libre 1515, for children and young people

Línea Libre (Free Line), run by Fundación para la Confianza, is the line children and young people dial themselves, the complement to Fonoinfancia above. In its own words: "Somos un canal de apoyo psicológico dirigido a niñas, niños y jóvenes, que es atendido directamente por psicólogas y psicólogos capacitados para contener, orientar, intervenir en crisis, y acoger inquietudes de salud mental o vulneración de derechos", a psychological support channel for girls, boys and young people, answered directly by psychologists trained to contain, orient, intervene in crisis, and take in mental-health concerns or rights violations.

Tel: 1515 ("llamando desde un celular o teléfono fijo", from a mobile or fixed phone)

Chat: web chat at linealibre.cl

Hours: "de lunes a viernes de 10:00 a 16:30 horas", Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 16:30. Outside those hours, *4141 answers around the clock.

Cost: "de forma gratuita", free.

While you are waiting to be answered

A line that is open can still be busy, and two of the lines above answer only on weekdays. If you are waiting, try to stay with someone you trust, or ask someone to sit with you until the call connects.

If you have anything near you that you could use to harm yourself, put it somewhere harder to reach, or ask someone else to hold it for you. Distance and time both help.

If waiting is not possible, dial 131, or go to a hospital emergency department. You do not need an appointment and you do not need to explain yourself well.

If you are worried about someone else

Ask them directly. Asking someone whether they are thinking of suicide does not put the idea there, and it often comes as a relief to be asked plainly.

Listen more than you advise. You do not need the right words, and you are not expected to fix anything.

If they are willing, offer to sit with them while they call one of the numbers above, or to make the call together. If they are in immediate danger, treat it as you would any medical emergency.

Supporting someone through this is heavy, and it is reasonable to want support of your own. If you are an adult worried about a child, Fonoinfancia answers parents and caregivers on the number above, and Salud Responde answers at any hour.

For services in other countries, see the list of helplines and suicide hotlines worldwide.
