If you have experienced sexual violence, what happened was not your fault, and support is available whenever you are ready. A sexual assault service, a doctor or a crisis line can help with immediate care and next steps. Our list of helplines and crisis lines worldwide includes services in many countries.
Sexual violence is common worldwide. The World Health Organization estimates how many women have experienced it from someone other than a partner 1, and that estimate opens the key figures below. Sexual violence means any sexual act, or attempt, without consent: rape, other sexual assault, unwanted sexual touching and coercion. It happens to people of every gender and age, most often by someone the person knows. Our domestic violence statistics page covers violence by a partner, and our adverse childhood experiences statistics page covers childhood experiences in more depth.
Figures depend on what a survey asks and on whether people feel able to say. Each figure below names what it counts, the people it covers and the year. A meta-analysis, or pooled estimate, combines the results of many studies into one figure.
Key figures
- About 263 million women worldwide have experienced sexual violence by someone other than a partner since the age of fifteen, according to World Health Organization estimates. (modelled estimate, published 2023, data year not stated) 1
- Global Burden of Disease estimates suggest that, age-standardised, 18.9% of women aged twenty and over worldwide had experienced sexual violence in childhood, as of 2023. (modelled estimate, 2023 data) 2
- Global Burden of Disease estimates suggest that, age-standardised, 14.8% of men aged twenty and over worldwide had experienced sexual violence in childhood, as of 2023. (modelled estimate, 2023 data) 2
- Across the European Union, 17.2% of women aged eighteen to seventy-four have experienced sexual violence, including rape, by a partner or by anyone else since age fifteen. (survey, lifetime (ever), 2021 wave (fieldwork 2020-2024) data) 3
- A 2023 pooled analysis found that a year after a sexual assault, about 41.5% of survivors still met the criteria for post traumatic stress disorder, with most recovery in the first three months. (pooled from prevalence studies, at one point in time, published 2023) 4
- In a Cochrane review, psychosocial therapies for survivors of rape or sexual assault in adulthood reduced post-traumatic stress more than inactive controls straight after treatment (standardised effect -0.83). The evidence is low-certainty, and there may be no difference by three months. (meta-analysis of trials, published 2023) 5
A Cochrane review is an independent review that pools the trials on one question. Psychosocial therapies are talking and practical support therapies. Inactive controls are comparison groups not given an active treatment. A standardised effect shows how big a change is on a common scale; below zero here means less post-traumatic stress. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is lasting distress after a traumatic event, such as flashbacks, nightmares and feeling constantly on guard. The European Union figure comes from the EU gender-based violence survey.

Sexual violence worldwide
The World Health Organization estimates how many women have experienced sexual violence by someone other than a partner. Levels differ between regions, and data from some regions are very limited. If this raises difficult feelings, our helplines and crisis lines worldwide can help.
- Across the European Union, 12.9% of women aged eighteen to seventy-four have experienced sexual violence by someone other than a partner since the age of fifteen. (survey, since age 15, 2021 wave (fieldwork 2020-2024) data) 3

- In Western Asia, an estimated 4% of women aged fifteen to forty nine had disclosed sexual violence by a non partner since the age of fifteen, as of 2018; the source urges caution. (modelled estimate, 2018 data) 6
- Only two studies, 1% of those used in the WHO non-partner sexual violence estimates, came from the Eastern Mediterranean Region, so figures for that region rest on very little data. (2018 data) 6
Childhood sexual violence
Boys experience it as well as girls. If this raises difficult feelings, our helplines and crisis lines worldwide can help. An odds ratio compares how likely something is in one group with another: above one means more likely, below one less likely. An age-standardised figure adjusts for differences in age between populations, so readers can compare places fairly. Longitudinal studies follow the same people over time. The Australian figures count different things: the national child maltreatment survey counts sexual abuse by anyone before eighteen, contact or not, while the personal safety survey counts abuse by an adult before fifteen.

Effects on mental health
Sexual violence often harms mental health, but many survivors recover over time. Post-traumatic stress is common in the first month and eases for many over the following year. If this raises difficult feelings, our helplines and crisis lines worldwide can help. An effect size shows how big a change or a difference is, on a common scale across studies; the further it is from zero, the bigger the change. Prospective studies follow survivors forward from soon after the assault.
- In prospective studies, about 74.6% of survivors met the criteria for post traumatic stress disorder one month after a sexual assault. (pooled from prevalence studies, at one point in time, published 2023) 4
- In a meta-analysis of studies, people who had experienced sexual assault in adolescence or adulthood, or across the lifespan, reported moderately worse mental health than people who had not (effect size 0.61). (meta-analysis of studies, published 2017) 30
- In Australia, 67% of women aged eighteen and over sexually assaulted by a man in the last ten years felt anxiety or fear for their personal safety in the year after the most recent incident. (survey, 2021-22 data) 29
- In England and Wales, 62.5% of women raped or assaulted by penetration, including attempts, since the age of sixteen said the most recent assault caused them mental or emotional problems. (survey, YE March 2020 and YE March 2025 data) 28
- In England and Wales, 57.7% of men raped or assaulted by penetration, including attempts, since the age of sixteen said the most recent assault caused them mental or emotional problems. (survey, YE March 2020 and YE March 2025 data) 28
Treatment and support
Psychological therapy can reduce post-traumatic stress in survivors, though the trial evidence is low-certainty 5. A trial showed that group therapy delivered by trained local workers can help even where specialists are scarce 31. If this raises difficult feelings, our helplines and crisis lines worldwide can help. Functional impairment means difficulty managing daily life.
- The trial enrolled women in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo who had experienced or witnessed sexual violence and who had high symptom scores and functional impairment, as the trial measured them. Six months after group therapy, 9% of these women had probable depression or anxiety, against forty-two percent with individual support. (randomised trial, at one point in time, 2011 data) 31

How to read these figures
Sexual violence is under-reported. People may not disclose it to an interviewer, especially when the perpetrator is someone they know, so real levels are likely higher.
Surveys define sexual violence differently. Some include unwanted touching and coercion; others count only rape. Broader definitions give higher figures.
Regional estimates from the World Health Organization rest on very few studies in some regions, notably North Africa and Western Asia.
Figures on effects show that sexual violence and later mental health problems often go together; recovery is common, and support helps.
Recovery after sexual violence is possible, and there is no right way to feel. Specialist sexual assault services can help with medical care, safety and, if you choose, reporting.
A psychologist or counsellor experienced in trauma can support you at your own pace. Our guide on how to find the right therapist explains what to look for. If you are in distress right now, see our helplines and crisis lines worldwide.
