How Much Does Therapy Cost in Stockholm in 2026?

In Stockholm's public system, a psychiatric outpatient visit costs the same as any other visit: 275 kronor, flat. A high-cost protection ceiling caps everything you pay for open care at 1,450 kronor in any 12 months; after that, care is free. Under 18 it is free from the start, and from 85 it is free again. Private therapy outside the regional system has no published price list.

One flat fee, one ceiling

Sweden lets each region set its own patient fees, and these are Region Stockholm's own published figures:

The arithmetic is worth pausing on: even a heavy treatment year, with visits every week, cannot cost you more than 1,450 kronor in patient fees. The ceiling is the system's real promise, and the frikort is issued automatically once you reach it.

If you are outside Stockholm, your region's figures will differ somewhat; nationally, children and young people pay no open-care fees up to their 20th birthday in most regions, and the ceiling exists everywhere.

How you get there

The route into public mental health care runs through your vårdcentral (health centre): a first appointment at 275 kr, and referral onward to psychiatric outpatient care where needed, at the same fee per visit. What the public system costs in money it can charge in waiting time, and that, more than price, is what moves people to the private market.

The private market

Private psychologists and therapists in Stockholm set their own fees, and no Swedish professional body publishes a schedule. Pages quoting a standard Stockholm session price are quoting themselves. The certain numbers are the region's: 275 kr per visit, 1,450 kr per year at most. For any private practice, the reliable figure is the one the practice quotes you.
