What therapy costs in Copenhagen in 2026

Denmark's headline is the one most guides miss: if you are 18 to 24 and dealing with mild to moderate anxiety or depression, psychologist treatment is free on a GP referral. For other referred adults the scheme's fixed rates put your share at 482.06 kr for a first session and 401.97 kr for each session after, for up to 12 sessions. Outside those gates you are in the private market, where fees are set practice by practice.

These are guiding estimates. Practitioners set their own fees.

The free scheme for 18 to 24

The official wording is direct: young people aged 18 up to and including 24 "can receive free psychologist treatment for mild to moderate anxiety and depression", under what Denmark calls the vederlagsfri ordning. The route is a GP referral, then a psychologist who works under the public scheme. The scheme's own fee list confirms it line by line: for this group the patient share on every consultation type, in person or by video, is 0.00 kr. If this is you, the price of therapy in Copenhagen is zero, and the only queue is the referral and the psychologist's waiting list.

The 60% scheme: eleven reasons, twelve sessions

For adults beyond that age band, subsidised psychologist treatment runs through psykologordningen:

• A GP referral is the gate. Your doctor assesses that you fall into one of eleven defined groups, which include victims of violence, robbery or rape, accident victims, the bereaved, survivors of suicide attempts, survivors of childhood sexual abuse, and adults with mild to moderate depression or anxiety, including OCD.
• The region pays 60% of the psychologist's fee via the health insurance system; you pay 40%.
• Up to 12 consultations per course, and for anxiety and depression a further 12 can follow on re-referral if the criteria are met.
• The scheme's fees are fixed and binding: participating psychologists may not charge above the published rates, revised each April and October. The current list, valid 1 April to 1 October 2026: a first consultation totals 1,205.16 kr, of which you pay 482.06 kr; each following consultation totals 1,004.92 kr, of which you pay 401.97 kr. Video consultations cost the same as in-person.

Outside the schemes: the private market

Seeing a psychologist privately, without a referral or outside the eleven groups, means paying the practice's own fee. There are no fixed rates for private consultations, and no published schedule. Pages quoting a standard Copenhagen session price are quoting themselves; the reliable figure is the one the practice quotes you, and asking about reduced rates costs nothing.
