Malawi decides what the state pays for through a health benefits package. The Ministry of Health sets that package in its Health Sector Strategic Plan III. The package defines which services are provided free of charge, or at reduced cost, in public facilities.

People identified as poor and vulnerable access the package free of charge. The plan also proposes contributions from the non- poor informal sector, with identification used to check exemptions. Zomba Mental Hospital is the main public in-patient psychiatric referral hospital.

Malawi regulates its medical and allied health practitioners through the Medical Council of Malawi. Both categories matter when you are choosing: a psychiatrist is registered as a medical practitioner, while clinically trained therapists who are not doctors fall under the allied health category.

The council's online service is where either registration can be confirmed. For a title that sits outside those two categories, this list is not the right check. You can check a registration on the Medical Council of Malawi online service.
