On insurance, the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 requires every insurer to make provision for treatment of mental illness on the same basis as physical illness. Ask your insurer what your policy covers before assuming therapy is out of pocket.

The same Act gives a right to mental healthcare run or funded by the government. That route starts at a government hospital or a community health centre, where a nominal registration fee is followed by assessment and treatment inside the public system.

In India, no single licence covers every mental-health role, and regulation is split by profession under separate laws. The Rehabilitation Council of India keeps the Central Rehabilitation Register, and a clinical psychologist is enrolled on it.

Only a person enrolled there may practise as a rehabilitation professional. Psychologists and counsellors come under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions, created by the NCAHP Act 2021, which is building a separate national register.
