Licensing here runs province by province rather than nationally. Each territory licenses under its own legislation as well. Where a practitioner works decides which rules apply to them, and which register holds them. The cities below are the places with practitioners listed here. Each city page carries the people who practise there.
In Canada a psychiatrist is a physician, so provincial health insurance covers their care with a referral; a psychologist is not, so in general it does not. That leaves most people paying privately or through work benefits.
There is no national therapy price, because health care is provincial, so what a session costs depends on the province and on the practitioner. Before booking, ask the fee and the session length. Ask whether your provider is a psychologist, a psychotherapist or a counsellor.
Ask whether a sliding scale or intern rate exists. In Quebec, consultations in the public health and education networks are free. Community health centres and school services in other provinces work on the same principle.

Registration and licensing
Canada has no national therapist licence. Health professions are regulated provincially, and each province registers through its own colleges: a psychology college, and, depending on the province, separate colleges for counselling therapy, psychotherapy, social work and psychiatric nursing.
Quebec's bodies are ordres and carry French names. No Canadian province runs a shared portal, so each college keeps its own register and no single national search covers them all. Our guide to how to check a Canadian therapist's registration, province by province sets out the steps.
The Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards lists the Canadian colleges province by province. Each entry carries its own verification page. Use the province where your therapist practises, not the one you live in. It covers psychology colleges only.
Several provinces register counselling therapists, psychotherapists or social workers separately. Those colleges keep their own registers, so check the title the person actually holds. For a psychologist, verify with the ASPPB directory of state and provincial licensing boards.
For any other title, go to that profession's own college in the province. Alberta reserves the title psychologist and the wordings built on it, and Registered Psychologist is the title an Alberta practice permit carries.
Ontario reserves Registered Psychotherapist, and its social work register carries Registered Social Worker. A Quebec listing says psychologue, and the psychotherapy permit there carries the separate title psychothérapeute.
Quebec reserves both words and their English spellings, and Ontario reserves psychotherapist as well.
