Mr Paul Salvage

Psychotherapist (Registered)

I am an experienced Psychodynamic Psychotherapist registered with the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) since 2014 and a member of the Universities Psychotherapy and Counselling Association (UPCA). Based in Hove, I work with adults and young people in private practice and as part of the Brighton Psychotherapy and Counselling Collective. I am also a qualified Clinical Supervisor with additional training in adolescents, neurodiversity, sexuality, and identity.

About Me

Over the course of my career, I have worked across a broad range of professional settings, including Sure Start Children's Centres, Sussex University, the Youth Offending Service, and Brighton Council, where I provided individual psychotherapy to young people aged 16–25 in supported accommodation. In private practice, I have been part of Brighton Therapy Centre since 2012, and since 2022, I have also seen clients from my own consulting room in Hove. I have worked with individuals experiencing a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety and depression, stress and burnout, trauma and loss, relationship breakdown, addiction, self-harm, and experiences of more severe mental health distress, including psychosis. I also have experience supporting those with neurodivergent presentations, including autism and ADHD. My own training involved sustained personal therapy, which I regard as essential; understanding my own patterns and defences is what allows me to be genuinely useful to the people I sit with. I bring that same commitment to honesty, warmth, and self-reflection into every therapeutic relationship.

Approach

My therapeutic approach is Psychodynamic. This means I believe that not everything driving our thoughts, feelings, and behaviour is immediately visible to us, that our past and present experiences shape how we respond to the world in ways that are not always straightforward or fully conscious. Many of the beliefs and patterns that cause us the most pain are, in a sense, invisible but active: influencing our relationships, our self-esteem, and our sense of possibility without our awareness. In practice, this means I will listen carefully to what you bring, your experiences, emotions, memories, and even your dreams, and think alongside you about what these might mean. I aim to create a reliable, consistent, and genuinely containing space where trust can develop, and where it becomes safe to explore even the most difficult feelings. I will share my thoughts openly with you, and I will work at a pace that feels right for you. This is not an intellectual exercise. Psychodynamic work often involves encountering powerful feelings, and I will support you through that process. The therapeutic relationship itself becomes part of the work; the patterns that emerge between us can illuminate the patterns you carry elsewhere, opening up new ways of relating and being. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy is an evidence-based treatment for a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety, depression, trauma, low self-esteem, addictions, and relationship challenges. I offer both open-ended psychotherapeutic work and shorter-term counselling, depending on your needs.
