Therapy Practice

verified by TherapyRoute

Pathfinder Therapy offers trauma-informed counselling and psychotherapy for adults navigating change, loss, identity shifts, and the emotional impact of living internationally. We work with people who feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsettled, even when life on the outside appears successful. Our approach is relational, steady, and grounded in safety. We pay careful attention to the nervous system, attachment patterns, and the ways past experiences shape present reactions. Many of our clients live abroad, work in high-responsibility roles, or have backgrounds in the military or other demanding professions. Some come with diagnoses such as PTSD, complex trauma, anxiety, depression, or burnout. Others simply know something no longer feels sustainable. Therapy here is not rushed and not overly clinical. We begin by building regulation and trust. From that foundation, we explore patterns, relational dynamics, and identity themes at a pace that feels manageable. We draw from Transactional Analysis, attachment theory, and contemporary trauma research, integrating somatic awareness where helpful. Whether you are adjusting to life in Portugal, managing significant life transitions, or seeking deeper understanding of yourself and your relationships, we provide a structured, compassionate space in which meaningful change can occur.

About Us

Pathfinder Therapy is a multi-practitioner clinic based in Lisbon, offering in-person and online therapy to English-speaking adults. Our therapists are qualified or in advanced clinical training, work under regular supervision, and practise within recognised professional and ethical frameworks. Working with us feels calm, contained, and collaborative. We do not position ourselves as distant experts. Instead, we work alongside you, helping you make sense of your experience while maintaining clear professional boundaries. Sessions are typically weekly and consistent, providing the reliability that psychological work requires. Many of the people who contact us are internationally mobile. They may be navigating relocation, cultural adjustment, relationship strain, career shifts, or questions of identity and belonging. Others are working through earlier trauma that has resurfaced during periods of change. We understand how disorientating transition can be, particularly when familiar support systems are far away. As a clinic, we are intentional about matching clients with therapists whose experience and style suit their needs. We value thoughtful pacing, respect for individual history, and the belief that autonomy and attachment can coexist. Our work is informed by both clinical depth and real-world understanding of change, uncertainty, and resilience. Pathfinder Therapy exists to offer a steady psychological anchor in the midst of movement.

Approach

At Pathfinder Therapy, our approach is relational, trauma-informed, and grounded in psychological safety. We understand that many difficulties are not signs of weakness or disorder but adaptive responses to overwhelming experiences, attachment disruptions, or prolonged stress. We begin with regulation and stabilisation. When the nervous system is dysregulated, insight alone is rarely sufficient. Drawing on contemporary trauma research, attachment theory, and Transactional Analysis, we help clients understand how their patterns developed and how they continue to operate in present relationships, work, and identity. We pay attention to both cognitive narratives and embodied experience, including how distress is felt physically. Our work is collaborative and paced carefully. We do not rush into exposure or catharsis. Instead, we create a structured, reliable space where clients can expand their window of tolerance, develop self-awareness, and strengthen internal resources. For some, this involves parts work and understanding internal conflicts. For others, it means exploring relational dynamics or long-standing life scripts that shape behaviour and expectation. We believe autonomy and attachment are not opposing forces. Therapy supports clients to make thoughtful choices, develop emotional regulation, and relate to others with greater clarity and security. Our aim is not dependency on therapy, but increased capacity in life beyond it.
