Approach
MY APPROACH
I work primarily from a narrative lens to help people move towards their preferred stories. The practices are customized and modified to fit the needs of each individual. The section below details this further
EXPLORING HEALING THROUGH A NARRATIVE LENS
In therapy, we make meaning of our lives through the stories that we tell. Often, the stories we focus on in therapy are the ones about our problems. But, we're more than just our problems. Therapy through a narrative lens helps us see the other parts of our lives, the ones outside the problem story. These are the safer, more empowering stories where solutions to our problems might lie. By focusing on these other stories, we can step into the life stories we prefer and live according to what matters most to us.
Here are some key beliefs we hold:
• You're not the problem, the problem is the problem.
• Nobody just takes hardship passively. We all respond to tough situations.
• You're the expert in your own life. That's why we work together to find solutions.
In sessions, we collaborate to rewrite our stories and move towards a life that feels right to you.
A SOCIAL JUSTICE LENS TO THERAPY
In therapy informed by a social justice lens, we consider how our social identities—like gender, caste, class, sexuality, religion, and ethnicity—affect our experiences and mental health.
Through a social justice lens, therapists:
• Acknowledge the impacts of social identities and intersections.
• Explore how this might lead to experiences of discrimination and vulnerability
• View distress as a reasonable response to challenging circumstances, not a flaw.
• Avoid imposing their views and instead foster collaboration with clients.
• Creating space for clients to define their experiences on their own terms.
Therapy, with a social justice perspective, respects diversity and works towards understanding and addressing the impact of social systems on mental health.
