My work focuses on helping you understand these patterns, how they developed, what keeps them in place, and how to begin responding to yourself and others in ways that feel more spacious and sustainable. I believe that what was learned to survive can also be unlearned, and that insight paired with practical steps creates lasting change.

About Me

My name is Maria Gracia Abad. I'm an Ecuadorian psychologist based in Ireland, offering online therapy in English and Spanish. I hold Graduate Membership with the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) and the British Psychological Society (BPS), and I'm trained and certified in CBT and EMDR, including an advanced protocol for complex trauma. The people I work with are often thoughtful and capable, used to managing alone, quietly carrying more than others realise. They may be navigating anxiety, low mood, burnout, trauma, or relationship difficulties, but what brings them to therapy is often something quieter underneath: a cycle of self-criticism that won't switch off, emotions that feel hard to access, or a persistent sense of being stuck despite doing everything right. Many find it easier to offer compassion to others than to themselves. Curiosity is at the core of how I work. I'm genuinely interested in people, how we think, feel, and develop the patterns we do. In sessions, that shows up as careful listening, thoughtful questions, and real attention to your specific experience. I'm engaged and present, never passive, and I'll ask the questions that matter and gently challenge when it's useful. Themes of identity, belonging, and adapting to change are ones I understand both personally and professionally. Having relocated from Ecuador to Ireland myself, I know firsthand how disorienting it can be to build a life somewhere new, how it can quietly shift your sense of who you are, where you fit, or what feels like home. Wherever you're coming from, if you're navigating your own version of this, it's something I can relate to on more than a professional level. For Spanish speakers, this also means working with someone who shares not only your language, but the cultural backdrop that often comes with it: family expectations, the pressure to stay strong, and the stigma that can still surround asking for help. Outside of sessions, I find grounding and renewal in nature. Even a simple walk to a green space helps me feel centred when life feels heavy. I bring that same calm and attentiveness into our work together. What continues to draw me to this work is seeing how much capacity people have for change, often more than they initially believe of themselves.

Approach

Therapy with me is collaborative, curious, and tailored to you. I pay close attention to your thoughts, emotions, and patterns, and I ask questions that help you notice, reflect, and gain insight. My style is thoughtful and analytical, I listen carefully, but I'm never passive. I speak up when it's helpful, to guide, clarify, or gently challenge in ways that support your growth. A recurring theme in my work is the tendency to rely on thinking, analysing, or self-reliance to manage emotional experiences, often while being the person others turn to for support. These are genuine strengths, but they can become exhausting when emotions feel harder to access, or when self-criticism and overthinking quietly take over. In therapy, we explore these patterns with curiosity rather than judgement, looking at how they developed and what keeps them in place. We'll explore these patterns with curiosity rather than judgement, creating space for both insight and change. Some sessions are more reflective, exploring emotions and experiences as they arise. Others are more practical, focusing on strategies and small steps to navigate everyday challenges. The balance depends on what's useful for you at the time. I draw on evidence-based approaches tailored to your specific needs: - CBT helps us explore how thoughts, emotions, and behaviours connect, noticing and shifting unhelpful patterns that keep you stuck. - EMDR allows us to process painful past experiences and meaningfully reduce their ongoing emotional impact. - Person-centred therapy ensures you always lead, I follow your pace, your priorities, and what feels safe and meaningful at any given time. Clients often tell me they feel more grounded, clearer, and more connected to themselves over time. My aim is to help you understand your experiences, reduce self-blame, and develop more supportive ways of responding to life. In our first sessions, we'll explore what brings you here and what you'd like from therapy. Together we'll shape a direction that fits, whether that means processing past experiences, managing present challenges, or finding new ways of responding to life events. Some people arrive knowing exactly what they want to work on; others need time to build trust before going deeper. I'm here for both. If your needs fall outside my areas of expertise, I'll always support you in finding the right referral. Getting you the right care matters more than keeping you in the therapy room. Reaching out for therapy can feel uncertain or daunting. You don't need clarity or the right words to begin, just reach out, and we'll find our way from there. The best way to reach me is by email or by leaving a voicemail with your name, number, and best time to call back. I'm often in session during the day and may not be able to answer directly, but I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Services

I provide online therapy for adults in English and Spanish. People I work with often feel overwhelmed, stuck, or emotionally drained. This can show up as: - Persistent anxiety, worry, or a constant sense of being on edge - Low mood, emotional heaviness, or loss of motivation - The impact of trauma or difficult past experiences that still shape how you think, feel, or relate to others - Burnout, chronic stress, or feeling stretched beyond capacity - Relationship difficulties, including communication challenges and emotional disconnection - Life transitions, uncertainty, or shifts in sense of self, direction, or belonging - Self-esteem difficulties, self-criticism, or a persistent sense of not being enough A common thread across many of these is the tendency to be hard on yourself, to overthink, self-blame, or manage everything alone. Therapy offers a different way of relating to your inner world. I work using evidence-based approaches, including: - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) - EMDR - Person-centred therapy Sessions are tailored to what you need. Some are exploratory and reflective; others are practical, focusing on concrete tools and strategies. The mix evolves as our work develops.
