About Me

I began working in psychotherapy 30 years ago when I became a volunteer youth counsellor. After training in various models of therapy, including Psychodynamic counselling, I discovered Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), which has been my primary modality since qualifying in 2010. CBT has a proven efficacy for treating many common mental health issues, and I love the collaboration, flexibility and pragmatism that this approach offers. In addition to CBT, I often find other methods such as imagery, or narrative work extremely useful. As therapist and client we join forces, sharing our expertise and skills to explore, learn, and work things through, to help you feel happier and more in control of your life. All the work we do together is specifically tailored to, and guided by you. Before I left the NHS in 2019, I spent 12 years working in mental health services, the last 6 years as a Senior Psychotherapist and Clinical Supervisor. I hold a First Class Honours degree as well as Post-Graduate Diplomas in Mental Health Studies and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. I have experience in treating a wide range of emotional and psychological problems, including: Anxiety; Low mood or Depression; Low Self Esteem; Phobias, Panic Disorder; Generalised Anxiety Disorder; Obsessive Compulsive Disorder; Psychogenic (non-epileptic) Seizures; Health Anxiety; Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Complex Trauma relating to difficult early experiences such as childhood sexual abuse.

Approach

CBT is a talking therapy that focuses on how our thoughts, beliefs and assumptions affect the way we feel and how we respond, physically, emotionally and behaviourally. Sometimes we can't put our finger on what's wrong, but life just feels hard. Anxiety and low mood can present in all sorts of ways and affect our quality of life. Maybe you're struggling to adapt to new circumstances, or you're just feeling a little lost. CBT has been proven to be effective in treating depression, low self esteem, and all kinds of anxiety, including anxiety related to trauma, as well as more deep seated issues that can arise from difficult early experiences. It's a collaborative approach to understanding in detail how your problems have developed, and how they may be being maintained. We'll meet usually once a week for up to an hour, and together we will explore situations and areas of difficulty, identify any unhelpful cycles, and help you decide what changes you'd like to make, and how.
