About Me

Kia ora, I'm Jonathan Kirk, counsellor and founder of Four Pillars Counselling in Howick, Auckland. At the heart of my work is a strong foundation of trust. I support teens, adults, and couples from diverse backgrounds who may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, low in mood, or uncertain about their next direction. They may be navigating anxiety, depression, stress, grief, trauma, relationship difficulties, or major life transitions. Often, they have been coping on their own for a long time and are ready for support. Originally from the United States, I bring over a decade of experience across counselling, helping professions, coaching, leadership, and personal development. While I am newer to private practice in New Zealand, I draw on a broad range of experience supporting people through challenges, change, and personal growth. I believe counselling should be a safe, non-judgemental space where you feel heard, understood, and respected. Together, we work to better understand what you are facing, explore what matters most, and find a way forward that fits your life.

Approach

My approach is person-centred, integrative, and collaborative. I work from the belief that you are the expert in your own life, and that counselling works best when it is shaped around your goals, values, relationships, culture, and lived experience. Rather than relying on a single model, I draw from a range of evidence-based and humanistic approaches including Person-Centred Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, Strength-Based practice, Existential Therapy, Te Whare Tapa Whā, and Gottman Method Couples Therapy. Together, we combine practical tools with deeper reflection to help you understand patterns, strengthen relationships, clarify values, navigate challenges, and create meaningful, lasting change. My style is warm and reflective while remaining grounded and practical.
