HCPC Reg. Psychologist

verified by TherapyRoute

My name is Jeyla and I am a Registered Practitioner Psychologist (Counseling Psychology) with the HCPC. I have almost 20 years of international experience in Psychology, Psychotherapy and Mental Health Counseling. I have worked in hospitals, research, education, private practice and in the 3rd sector. I started my career in Geneva, Switzerland, and worked extensively in Moscow, Dubai, and most recently Singapore, before moving to Edinburgh to be closer to family. I work both in-person and online, so I can be available to clients outside the UK as well. Please don't hesitate to reach out for a free initial consultation (phone or video call only).

About Me

I suppose what stands out about me most is that I have personally experienced a lot of the things I work on professionally - I've lived a big life and the world can be a big learning curve. I can confidently say I am not the same therapist I was 20 years ago or even the therapist I imagined I would be back in my university days! You are always growing and learning and evolving as a practitioner, so I remain committed to ongoing professional development and supervision. The best thing about all my years of practice is that I get to “mix and match” and tailor my approach to each individual person, because no two are ever the same. I strongly believe in working together to find what works best, meeting each person "where they are", and I especially enjoy working with parents and children. I work in English and in Russian and have supported many multicultural and multilingual families over the years. Since moving to Edinburgh, I have done a lot of work with body image and supporting a positive self-concept and a stronger more confident sense of self in adult clients. I have extensive training and experience in managing big life transitions (e.g. relocation, separation/divorce, grief and loss etc.) and practice from a culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, gender-affirming and neuro-affirming stance. I am also experienced and dedicated to supporting mental health and neurodiversity and advocating for inclusion in educational and workplace settings.

Approach

Over the years I was fortunate to add to my toolbox from a variety of different modalities, but overall I prioritise a holistic person-centered lens. At the end of the day - this process has to work for YOU. I have trained in different therapies like Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness Based Therapy and Transactional Analysis. My personal interests are in Existential and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and I am passionate about how our own childhood experiences of attachment (and separation) shape our family and parenting relationships and dynamics. I work with a variety of mental health concerns but most of my experience is with anxiety and depression and the behaviours they often underpin. I often say to clients that therapy is a living thing - it's first and foremost a relationship - we have to be the right match for each other and it's my job to find what works for you and to be honest with you if or when it doesn't. Perhaps most importantly, if I am not the right therapist for you, I will do my best to find someone who will be.
