Ms Jan Nelson, MSW

Licensed Clinical Social Worker

I am committed to helping you work through your challenges so you can feel better, do better and your life is more balanced. The change process is a process and I can support you as we work towards profound and sustainable change.

About Me

I had a very successful career in banking and finance but discovered that my true calling was in helping others to overcome their struggles and hardship. I have always been very attuned to the emotions of others and my previous career allowed me to learn that I have a gift in helping those in need. I vividly recall attending many corporate events and functions and during the final hour of these, I found myself talking with someone who was sharing a very personal and private story with me. I listened to every person with great compassion and empathy with the intent to help. My desire to help was so compelling that I returned to school at New York University to earn my Master's Degree in Social Work and changed my career altogether. This was one of the best decisions in my life. After graduating, I began working at Bellevue Hospital in a children's crisis program where I eventually become the program director. I also served as a lead therapist at the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health and a psychiatric Social Worker for the Mobile Crisis Team at the Visiting Nurse Service of New York. Over the past 17+ years, I've helped so many families, parents, children, and individuals to resolve problems that they never thought were possible.

Approach

To help you feel steadier and more capable, sessions blend attentive listening with practical steps paced to what feels manageable. We map patterns, clarify roles and expectations, and try small, measurable shifts between meetings so progress becomes trackable and meaningful.
