Mr James van der Walt

Licensed Clinical Psychologists

A clinical psychologist working from a predominately relational psychoanalytic paradigm

About Me

I offer a space to explore your inner world. We can work together to understand how past experiences and unconscious patterns shape your present. This approach helps you make sense of recurring feelings or behaviours that might feel stuck. It suits those seeking lasting change by addressing underlying dynamics. You can gain profound self-awareness and find new ways forward.

Approach

I attend relationally, using reflective noticing to trace how earlier attachments surface in current relationships and choices. Sessions are steady and exploratory — online or in my Johannesburg consulting room, in English — where we slow moments of tension, name bodily and emotional reactions, and follow the patterns that emerge between us. I invite small, manageable experiments between meetings and bring careful clinical observation into our shared map of what's changing. This way of working often fits adolescents, young adults and men seeking clearer understanding of relational difficulties.
