Blog - Transitions

How to Help Your Child Transition Well.

Transitions are difficult. Whether you are arriving new or staying and starting the new school year, being part of an international community means you might be making new friends, trying to figure out whom to sit with and play with during lunchtime, or adjusting to changes in your already established friendships because of friends leaving.

Talking to your child and supporting them through these changes are important. Help your child keep an open mind. Reassure them that being uncomfortable, worried or nervious are all part of transitions. These feelings will not be staying with them forever.

The beginning of the school year presents new opportunities for your child to start over, make new friends and develop new skills.

  • Talk to your child about their new class. Who are their friends? Who are the new friends they just met? What did they learn about them?
  • Invite your child to try to help the new students by talking to them, inviting them to play or eat with them.
  • Support your child by asking them about their new friends’ names. Who they would like to get to know more or better? What is their plan for doing that.
  • Brainstorm with your newbie some conversation starters, such as joining a group; May I play with you? or making plans to join a group for break or lunch; “May I join you for playtime? I am new and I would love to make new friends. You seem nice.”
  • Stay in contact with your child’s teacher and conselor.
