Mrs Belinda Heinonen, MFT

Certified Marriage and Family Therapist

verified by TherapyRoute

I am a registered psychiatric nurse in Finland and have continued my studies to become a family and couples therapist at the University of Jyväskylä. My areas of expertise include neuropsychiatric symptoms such as ADHD and autism spectrum disorders, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, personality and neurodevelopmental disorders, couples therapy, trauma related to abuse or violence, anger, grief, and post-traumatic stress. I am also experienced in supporting clients through major life changes, including divorce, crises, and transitions affecting children and adolescents. Therapy sessions are offered in English, French, Finnish, and Lingala.

About Me

I am an individual, family and couples therapist working integratively, drawing on both emotion-focused and solution-focused approaches. I support individuals, couples, and families facing a wide range of life challenges, and I have gained diverse experience both in Finland and abroad. After completing my degrees in psychology, I have worked extensively in counseling and psychotherapy across various settings, including adult mental health services, psychiatric wards, children and youth services, women’s shelters, drug and alcohol rehabilitation services, and both private and public sector organizations. Outside of work, I enjoy running, home workouts, and watching educational videos. I love traveling within Finland and have a deep appreciation for different cultures. I also treasure spending time with my husband of 18 years and our two children.

Approach

My goal is to provide you with a safe, confidential space where you can explore your feelings and tackle life’s challenges. Together, we’ll focus on finding practical solutions that will move you towards a better life. We’ll work together to give you concrete tools to manage your emotions, reactions, and to make changes that improve your well-being. Our shared goal is to find effective and actionable steps that help you move forward in life, whether that’s dealing with anxiety, relationship issues, depression, or navigating life changes. My approach is both emotion-focused and solution-focused. This means that initially, we’ll explore the emotions, thoughts, and experiences that are holding you back from living a fulfilling life. At the same time, we’ll work on finding actionable solutions that lead you to the change you want. The focus is not just on understanding the problem, but on finding clear steps that will move you toward progress — whether that’s learning how to manage anxiety, improving relationships, or building resilience for future challenges. In our sessions, we don’t just focus on past issues or problems; we concentrate on how to improve the present and make lasting changes for the future. For example, if you’re struggling with anxiety or stress, we’ll practice concrete relaxation techniques that you can apply in your daily life. If relationships are challenging, we’ll explore ways to communicate more effectively, set boundaries, and support your emotional needs. I’ll work with you actively and directly, ensuring you see progress during the process. You can expect each session to have a clear objective and practical strategies you can use in your everyday life. My goal is to ensure that, through therapy, you learn to recognize your strengths and develop practical skills to manage stress, improve relationships, and make decisions that will lead you toward a more fulfilling life.
