Alisa

Ms Alisa Ray

Art Therapist

I offer on-line art therapy especially for South Africans living in the UK or Europe. Art therapy is not an art lesson, and you do not have to be “good at art” to engage in art therapy sessions. Together we explore art materials and art processes that can support you in the difficulties you face living far away from home.

About Me

I am part of the first cohort of art therapists to be trained at a master’s level in South Africa. Prior to graduating in 2023, I worked as a Community Art Counsellor for many years. I have worked with diverse population groups and continue to work in a psychiatric recovery centre and a rehab centre. My first degree in the 1990’s at SOAS, University of London has inspired me to offer on-line art therapy sessions for South Africans living in the UK or elsewhere in Europe.

Approach

We use simple art processes and also talk therapy (if that is what you are comfortable with) to explore what your needs are. This is the start of our journey together. My approach is gentle and compassionate.Sessions via secure video from Johannesburg in English feel practical and calm: we check in briefly, engage in art making and then pause to reflect on meaning.

Basic Information

Services

I have experience working with people from diverse backgrounds who seek healing from their emotional suffering. Having lived in the UK as a young student in the 1990’s, far away from my home in Johannesburg, I know how important it is to ask for help when everything feels overwhelming, and your support system is across the ocean. I hope I can be there to assist you.
