What couples counselling is, and what it is not
Couples counselling means both partners seeing one practitioner together, with the relationship as the subject.
The approaches share the same ground 1. A relational frame and an active way of working. The target is the pattern that keeps a difficulty alive, not the person blamed for it.
It is not a hearing and nobody is judged. Couples come at every stage, including those already living apart. Relationship distress is an ordinary reason adults seek therapy 2.
How does a session with two people work?
The usual form is both partners present, with rules set in advance for any separate contact with one of you 1. Ask about them at the start.
Sessions run about an hour, often weekly, and many approaches expect months of work rather than a single conversation. The first sessions usually cover how the relationship got to this point.
Several of the practitioners listed here describe themselves as family therapists. That is a recognised category in this country. It means the work with two people sits inside a wider view of the family. No model has been shown to outperform the others for relationship distress 2.
Who is qualified to do this work?
In Zimbabwe the register names this work.
The Allied Health Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe registers psychologists and clinical social workers 3. It also carries a family therapist and counsellor category. That means a practitioner doing couples and family work can hold a registration that names it.
A psychiatrist is a doctor and registers with the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe 4.
Ask which council a practitioner is registered with and in which category, then check it. Our listings show the category each practitioner states.
Titles you will see include Psychologist, Clinical Social Worker and Family Therapist - Counsellor. Search the register by name at Allied Health Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe (AHPCZ). A current entry is that body's own published record of the person.
How couples counselling is charged in Helensvale
We have no honest figure to publish for what marriage counselling costs in Harare, and we will not invent one.
TherapyRoute has no cost guide for Zimbabwe yet. Session length shapes the fee. So do the practitioner's category and experience, and whether the session is in a consulting room or online. A couples session is often longer than an individual one.
Ask each practitioner what a session for two people costs and how long it lasts, before booking.
Is couples counselling the right first step?
Some situations need something before a joint session.
Moderate to severe aggression between partners is one reason 1. Active alcohol or other substance misuse is another. So are an affair still going on and psychotic symptoms.
A careful practitioner asks about these before seeing a couple together.
Where one partner is afraid of the other, the safety and legal routes below come first. The law here lets someone else apply for a protection order on behalf of the person at risk. A counsellor or a relative may do it, including where the person at risk cannot go to court themselves.
Couples counselling across Zimbabwe
Our own listings are Harare-weighted, and the practitioners record Shona alongside English, with isiNdebele present 5. Several describe themselves as family therapists rather than as psychologists or counsellors.
The set is small, so availability is the practical constraint. Ask about waiting time in your first message, along with the fee.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does marriage counselling cost in Harare?
We have no honest figure to publish. TherapyRoute has no cost guide for Zimbabwe, and we will not invent a range.
Session length shapes the fee. So do the practitioner's category and experience, and whether the session is in a consulting room or online.
Where a practitioner states a fee on their listing, that is their own. Ask each one before you book.
Is there a register that names this kind of work?
Zimbabwe has one. The Allied Health Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe registers psychologists and clinical social workers, and it carries a family therapist and counsellor category3.
So a practitioner doing couples and family work can hold a registration that names it. Several practitioners listed here describe themselves that way5.
Ask which council and which category, then check the portal.
Is there free or low-cost counselling here?
Connect, the Zimbabwe Institute of Systemic Therapy, runs a counselling service in Harare6. Its fees are its own and we do not publish them.
We searched for a verified low-cost service in Bulawayo and hold none, so we name none5.
Practitioners listed here set their own fees. Ask whether there is any arrangement for people who cannot meet the usual one.
Can sessions be done online?
Practitioners who work by video say so on their listing. With a small set of couples-qualified practitioners5, video widens what is reachable from outside Harare.
Psychotherapy delivered live by video reaches outcomes close to in-person work, across therapies in general rather than couples work7.
Ask about video and about waiting time in the same message.
Does marriage counselling work?
Couple therapy is an effective treatment for relationship distress, and the main models reach broadly similar results2.
Behavioural, cognitive-behavioural, emotionally focused and integrative behavioural couple therapy meet the criteria researchers use for a well-established treatment8.
Those findings describe groups of couples in studies. They are not a forecast about any one relationship, and nobody listed here can promise you an outcome.
What the research does not settle is which approach suits you. Ask a practitioner how they work with two people, and what they do when the two of you want different things.
What happens in a marriage counselling session?
The practitioner works with what happens between you, not with one person's account of it.
Practice differs on what comes first. Some approaches open with a formal assessment that combines joint and individual meetings. Others use no set assessment stage1.
A first meeting normally covers three things. Why you are coming now, how each of you sees the problem, and what each of you wants changed.
Ask before you start whether the practitioner sees each partner alone. Ask how you will know the work is done.
Will a medical aid society pay for marriage counselling in Zimbabwe?
We hold no readable source on this. The association site for medical aid societies could not be read safely when we tried, so nothing here is linked to it and nothing is asserted from it.
Societies set their own benefits, and the practitioner's registration category affects what can be claimed.
Ask your society whether consultations with that category are claimable on your plan, and ask the practitioner what they are able to invoice.
When should we go for marriage counselling?
There is no threshold you have to cross first. Relationship distress is one of the commonest reasons adults seek psychotherapy at all2.
Distress between partners travels. It is associated with mood, anxiety and substance-use difficulties in the partners themselves, and with difficulties for children in the household1.
Couples come with a repeating argument, with an affair, with a decision about whether to stay together, and with none of those. You do not have to agree on the problem before you make contact.
If the problem is safety rather than the relationship
Where there is violence at home, these are the routes, and they are not counselling.
Musasa runs toll-free gender-based violence lines. It also provides counselling, shelter, one-stop centres and legal aid, with offices in five cities. The United Nations country team names the same organisation and the same line 9. Childline Zimbabwe operates a freephone line for children reachable from any network anywhere in the country 10.
At any police station you can ask for the Victim Friendly Unit 11. It exists for sexual offences and domestic violence, and its coordinators are trained to take a report privately.
The legal route is a protection order under the Domestic Violence Act. The application is lodged with the clerk or registrar of the magistrates court 12. The Act covers estranged spouses, people living together, and people in an intimate relationship. A police officer, counsellor, relative or neighbour may apply on the complainant's behalf.
For the relationship itself there is Connect, the Zimbabwe Institute of Systemic Therapy 6. It is a registered welfare organisation in Harare, providing couples, family and individual counselling.
