Marriage Counsellors & Couples Therapists in Abeokuta, Nigeria

The standard form is both partners in the room ¹. Rules for any contact with one of you alone should be agreed in advance. Ask what they are at the start.

Sessions usually run about an hour, often weekly, and most approaches expect a course of work over some months. Bring the history, not only this week's argument. Practitioners will normally spend the early sessions on how the two of you got here.

Couples work is also one of the routes used for sexual difficulties. Couple sex therapy is among the effective options for psychosexual problems ². If that is part of why you are coming, say so when you enquire.

The answer depends on the profession, and one part of it is still settling.

A psychiatrist is a doctor. The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria is the regulator and keeps the register of doctors ³. For counselling, a statutory council exists: the Counselling Practitioners Council of Nigeria was created by an Act of 2022 and inaugurated in 2025 ⁴. We could not open a public register for it, so we cannot tell you to check a name against one.

Until that register is public, the practical step is a question. Ask which body a practitioner is registered with, what their qualification is, and where it was awarded. Expect a straightforward answer.

Titles you will see include Psychiatrist and Counsellor.

Fees here are set by each practitioner, and we publish no average.

Our guide to what therapy costs in Nigeria sets out what people are quoted and what changes it ⁵. After reading it, ask the practitioner directly what a session for two people costs and how long it lasts. A couples session is often longer than an individual one.

Lagos and Abuja carry most of the practitioners listed here, and fees differ between them and between categories of practitioner. Nothing on this page calculates a price for you.

There are situations in which a joint appointment should wait.

Moderate to severe aggression between partners is one reason ¹. Active alcohol or other substance misuse is another. So are an affair that is still continuing and psychotic symptoms.

A practitioner will normally ask about these before agreeing to see you together.

Where one partner is afraid of the other, that is a safety matter first. The services below are the ones for it. Starting on your own is not giving up on the relationship.

The practitioners listed here write both the British and the American spelling. Lagos and Abuja hold most of the couples-qualified practitioners on our own listings ⁴. The languages recorded alongside English are mainly Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo. Filter by language before you write.

A small number of practitioners in Lagos record sex and marriage therapy together. If it is part of what you need, name it in your first message rather than hoping it comes up.

We do not hold a verified list of free couples services in Nigeria. We will not name one we could not check.

Practitioners listed here set their own fees. Some adjust them and some do not, and a listing does not say which.

Ask directly whether there is any arrangement for people who cannot meet the usual fee. Ask before the first session, not after.

A statutory council exists.

A psychiatrist is a doctor, and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria keeps that register³.

Until the counselling register is public, ask what the qualification is and where it was awarded.

Some do. Most listed practitioners are in Lagos and Abuja⁴. Video is often the route from elsewhere.

Psychotherapy delivered live by video reaches outcomes close to in-person work, across therapies in general rather than couples work⁶.

Ask whether both of you may join from separate places.

Couple therapy is an effective treatment for relationship distress, and the main models reach broadly similar results².

Behavioural, cognitive-behavioural, emotionally focused and integrative behavioural couple therapy meet the criteria researchers use for a well-established treatment⁷.

Those findings describe groups of couples in studies. They are not a forecast about any one relationship, and nobody listed here can promise you an outcome.

What the research does not settle is which approach suits you. Ask a practitioner how they work with two people, and what they do when the two of you want different things.

The practitioner works with what happens between you, not with one person's account of it.

Practice differs on what comes first. Some approaches open with a formal assessment that combines joint and individual meetings. Others use no set assessment stage¹.

A first meeting normally covers three things. Why you are coming now, how each of you sees the problem, and what each of you wants changed.

Ask before you start whether the practitioner sees each partner alone. Ask how you will know the work is done.

The National Health Insurance Authority runs the national scheme and publishes its benefit package⁸. We hold no source stating whether counselling for a couple sits inside that package, and we will not guess at one.

Private cover is separate, and each plan sets its own outpatient benefits.

Ask your health maintenance organisation whether outpatient consultations with your practitioner's category are covered, and ask the practitioner what they can invoice.

There is no threshold you have to cross first. Relationship distress is one of the commonest reasons adults seek psychotherapy at all².

Distress between partners travels. It is associated with mood, anxiety and substance-use difficulties in the partners themselves, and with difficulties for children in the household¹.

Couples come with a repeating argument, with an affair, with a decision about whether to stay together, and with none of those. You do not have to agree on the problem before you make contact.

Where there is violence or coercion at home, counselling is not the first call.

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons takes reports of sexual and gender-based violence ⁹. Its rapid response unit coordinates the response and investigates. It also connects survivors to counselling and rehabilitation. It is the national route we could verify on a government surface.

The law is the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act of 2015. The same agency describes it as prohibiting violence in private as well as public life.

The National Human Rights Commission takes complaints, including under that Act ¹⁰. It works office hours, so it is a route for redress rather than an emergency.

Lagos State runs its own domestic and sexual violence agency. Its official site would not load for us, so we do not link it here.
