What couples counselling is
Couples counselling is talking therapy with both partners present, and the relationship is what is being worked on.
Approaches generally share similar features 1. The counsellor takes an active part and works on the patterns that keep a difficulty going. They build an alliance with both of you at once.
The practitioner is not there to decide between you.
Marriage counselling and couple therapy name the same work. It is not arbitration and it reports to nobody. Relationship distress is an ordinary reason adults seek therapy 2.
How does a session with two people work?
Both partners attend, and any separate contact with one of you should run under rules agreed in advance 1. Ask what they are.
A session commonly runs about an hour, often weekly, and many approaches expect a course over months. The early sessions cover the history as well as the current difficulty.
Listings here are concentrated in Cairo and its suburbs, so availability shapes what is possible. No model beats the others for relationship distress 2. Fit, language and when someone can see you decide the rest.
Who is qualified to do this work?
Law 210 of 2020 amended the 2009 mental health law. It created a psychotherapy licence for practitioners who are not psychiatrists, issued by the Ministry of Health and Population 3.
The title clinical psychologist is not itself protected 4. Someone may use it without holding that licence. The Egyptian Psychologists Association is a body people join, not a state register. Psychiatrists are a separate case, licensed as doctors under the medical profession law 5.
Ask which of these applies to your practitioner, and ask to see the document.
How couples counsellors charge in Alexandria
A session for two people is often longer than an individual one.
Ask the practitioner, not us, these questions.
- What does a session for two cost?
- How long does a session for two run?
- Is there any arrangement for people who cannot meet the usual fee?
Is couples counselling the right first step?
A joint session is not always the right start.
Moderate to severe aggression between partners is one reason 1. Active alcohol or other substance misuse is another. So are a continuing affair and psychotic symptoms.
A practitioner usually asks about these before agreeing to see a couple together. Individual or specialist help may come first.
Couples sessions require safety. Where one partner is afraid of the other, safety comes before counselling. Seeing someone on your own first is a normal beginning.

If nobody listed here can see you soon, widen the search. The country page and sessions online are the route, rather than a second town.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can couples counselling be done online?
Many practitioners work by video and say so on their listing.
Psychotherapy delivered live by video reaches outcomes close to in-person work6. That evidence was not confined to couples.
Couples work by video shows few significant differences from meeting in a room, and the therapeutic alliance is comparable7.
Ask whether they see couples online, and whether both of you may join from different places.
Does counselling before marriage make a difference?
One trial followed engaged and newly married couples for three years. Those given no programme separated at a higher rate than those completing any of the three offered. A single relationship awareness session did as well as the two skills courses8.
Reviewers are cautious about how long such effects last9. They also ask who these programmes reach.
What does marriage counselling cost?
Where a practitioner states a fee on their listing, that figure is their own. Ask before the first session. Ask too whether the fee runs per session or per person in the room.
Does marriage counselling work?
Couple therapy is an effective treatment for relationship distress, and the main models reach broadly similar results2.
Behavioural, cognitive-behavioural, emotionally focused and integrative behavioural couple therapy meet the criteria researchers use for a well-established treatment10.
Those findings describe groups of couples in studies. They are not a forecast about any one relationship, and nobody listed here can promise you an outcome.
What the research does not settle is which approach suits you. Ask a practitioner how they work with two people, and what they do when the two of you want different things.
What happens in a marriage counselling session?
The practitioner works with what happens between you, not with one person's account of it.
Practice differs on what comes first. Some approaches open with a formal assessment that combines joint and individual meetings. Others use no set assessment stage1.
In the first meeting you usually talk about why you are coming now, how each of you sees the problem, and what each of you wants changed.
Before you start, ask the practitioner these questions.
- Does the practitioner see each partner alone?
- How will you know the work has finished?
When should we go for marriage counselling?
There is no threshold you have to cross first.
Distress between partners travels. It is associated with mood, anxiety and substance-use difficulties in the partners themselves, and with difficulties for children in the household1.
Couples come with a repeating argument, with an affair, with a decision about whether to stay together, and with none of those. You do not have to agree on the problem before you make contact.
If the problem is safety rather than the relationship
Where there is violence, coercion or fear at home, the useful services are the ones near you. They are not the same in any two countries.
The NO MORE Global Directory lists domestic and sexual violence helplines and specialist support services country by country. The NO MORE Foundation built it with the United Nations and the World Bank 11. It covers almost every country and territory the United Nations recognises.
