Ask the practice whether you need a referral before booking. Many health systems require a doctor's referral; some do not. How the appointment is paid for can change what is needed.

A psychiatrist asks about the problem that brought you. They may also ask about your life, your thoughts and feelings, and your physical health. You can ask about any diagnosis, how the psychiatrist has made sense of your situation, and what the care plan is.

The title you will see is Psychiatrist (MD (Psych)). Search the register by name at National Medical Commission (NMC). Check that the name and title match and that the entry is current. If they do not, ask the practitioner why.

In India registration goes by category: a clinical psychologist is enrolled on a statutory register. Counsellors come under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions Act 2021, which provides for their registration.
