How Much Does Therapy Cost in Dubai in 2026?

A standard 50-minute session with a psychologist in Dubai costs AED 750 to AED 850. A shorter 30-minute appointment costs AED 400 to AED 510, and a 90-minute session runs AED 1,200 to AED 1,530. Couples sessions start around AED 950.

These are guiding estimates. Therapists set their own fees.

There is also a named public psychiatric route for Dubai, which almost no fee guide mentions. It is covered below.

Most Dubai clinics do not bill your insurer directly. You pay in full at the appointment and claim the money back afterwards, and many policies will only reimburse you if a doctor referred you first. That mechanic matters more to what you actually spend than the headline fee does, and it is explained below.

Cost by session length

Dubai is unusual in that clinics here tend to price by the minute rather than offering a single session fee. That is genuinely useful, because it lets you match the appointment to what you need and to what you can afford.

A first consultation is usually charged at the standard session rate, around AED 750, though some clinics charge more for a longer initial appointment.

Formal assessments are a different matter and considerably more expensive. A full psychological or neurodevelopmental assessment starts around AED 5,500, because it involves several hours of testing, scoring and a written report rather than a single conversation. If someone recommends an assessment, ask what it includes and what it will cost before you agree.

Pay first, claim later

This is the part that catches people out in the UAE, and it is worth understanding before you book.

Health insurance is required for residents, but most mental health clinics operate on a pay-and-claim basis. You settle the full fee at the appointment, the clinic gives you an invoice, and you submit it to your insurer yourself. Whether you get anything back, and how much, depends entirely on your policy.

There is a second condition that surprises people. As one Dubai clinic puts it plainly: "Many insurance policies require that the individual is referred to allied health services by a medical doctor." In other words, seeing a psychologist on your own initiative may leave you unable to claim, even if your policy covers psychology, simply because there was no referral first.

Three questions settle this before you spend anything:

• Ask your insurer whether your policy covers psychology and counselling, or only psychiatry. Many cover the second and not the first.
• Ask whether a referral from a doctor is required, and get one first if it is.
• Ask the clinic whether it bills your insurer directly or whether you claim back yourself.

Getting the referral in place before your first appointment can be the difference between recovering most of the cost and recovering none of it.

The public route

The first question in the UAE is not which city you are in. It is which system you are in, and Dubai's public psychiatric provision is named.

Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital, run by Emirates Health Services, is described on the federal government portal as "the first internationally accredited specialised medical facility in the field of mental health in the Middle East", and the same page states that "the hospital serves patients from Dubai and the Northern Emirates". Its outpatient clinics cover children, adults, the elderly, people of determination and addiction, and it offers forensic psychiatry services.

Dubai Health's psychiatry service treats anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and addictive behaviour, with "medication, various therapies and lifestyle advice, or a combination". Its contact number is 800 60, listed as available around the clock.

One thing neither publishes is a price. We read both services' own pages and neither carries a fee, a cost, or a statement of free provision, so we cannot tell you what the public route costs. What we can say is that it exists, it is specialised, and contacting it costs nothing. If private fees are out of reach, this is the door to try first.

If the fees are difficult

Beyond the public route, we will be straightforward: Dubai has less charitable and sliding-scale infrastructure than most cities this size, and we were not able to verify one to point you to. That is a gap in what we know rather than a claim that nothing exists, and we would rather say so than invent a list.

The levers that genuinely work here:

Use the shorter appointment. A 30-minute session at AED 400 to 510 costs roughly half the standard 50-minute session. For ongoing work, and particularly for medication reviews or check-ins between longer pieces of work, this is a real and legitimate way to reduce the monthly cost. Ask whether your therapist offers it.

Get the referral. If your policy will reimburse most of a session but only with a doctor's referral, the referral is worth more than any discount you will negotiate.

Ask about the fee directly. Clinics vary by several hundred dirhams for the same session length, and the two we could verify differ by AED 100 on a standard session and by AED 330 on a 90-minute one. Ringing three clinics is worth the twenty minutes.

Ask about online sessions. Some practices charge less for these, and it removes the cost and time of crossing the city.

Questions worth asking before you book

• What is the fee, and how long is the session?
• Do you offer shorter appointments, and what do they cost?
• Is the first appointment charged differently?
• Do you bill my insurer directly, or do I pay and claim?
• Do I need a doctor's referral for my insurance to reimburse me?
• Is the practitioner a psychiatrist, a clinical psychologist or a counsellor, and are they licensed in the UAE?
• If an assessment is recommended, what does it include and what is the total cost?
